‘I Have Fought Tyson Fury & Anthony Joshua – Here’s Who Wins Superfight’

A meeting between British heavyweight kings, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, has been a dream fight that boxing fans have wanted for ages, but to this day it has eluded them. To add fuel to the fire, a mutual conqueror of both has weighed in on who he feels would claim the victory.

Oleksandr Usyk has defeated both Fury and Joshua twice and there have been rumours that a potential third fight with the Gypsy King is on the cards. Usyk has said himself that he would like another meeting with the man from Morecambe to round off his career. The Ukrainian’s feelings as to who would come out on top in a clash between his former rivals would explain why he wants a trilogy with Fury instead of Joshua.

Speaking to the podcaster, Zach Hirsch, the former undisputed heavyweight champion shared that he believes that the man who defeated his compatriot, Wladimir Klitschko, to become WBO, WBA, IBF champion would better Joshua, who Usyk took the same titles off in 2021.

Usyk has fought both, on two separate occasions, so he’s a good judge

“I think it’s Tyson Fury. He’s a bigger man, a smart guy.”

Clearly, Fury’s undoubted adaptability had worn off on his once-bitter rival. Firstly, his ability and durability to go the distance, as he demonstrated in his most famous victory to dethrone Wladimir Klitschko. Another point of notice would be Fury’s trilogy with Deontay Wilder. In the first fight, which coincided with his comeback from his mental health troubles, Fury had no fear and switched to the southpaw stance mid-fight. In the other two meetings, Fury showed he possessed such knockout power that he stopped a man who had knocked out all but one of his victims, twice.

The 37-year-old’s two fights with Fury were a lot more competitive than those with Joshua, although the scorecards would suggest otherwise with Usyk holding both a unanimous and majority decision over both.

Both fights went to the scorecards and both went in favour of the Ukrainian

He first met with Fury in May 2024, with all credit to the Brit as he challenged Usyk more than he had ever been challenged before. It was a tight affair between the two undefeated champions and the Brit was winning the odd round and did manage to catch the ever-elusive Usyk a few times, especially with uppercuts. It appeared that the Gypsy King was a match and had a chance at taking the gold medal Olympian’s professional 0, that was until the turning point of round 9, when a clean left hook struck Fury on the temple, which bounced the 6’9″ off the ropes and forced him to turn his back. Eventually, he wilted and suffered a knockdown, making that round a 10-8 for his opponent. That proved crucial when the final cards were read; 115-112 Usyk, 114-113, Fury and 114-113 Usyk.

They met again at the end of 2024 and, on the surface, it looked as though Fury would enact revenge, again not making it an easy night’s work for the now WBA, WBC, and WBO champion. Despite Fury’s best efforts, however, the second clash ended with all three judges ruling Usyk’s way.

Again, the scorecards came in in Usyk’s favour

Many said the judges were kind to Joshua in the second meeting, despite the Watford native providing a better account of himself when the two rematched in Jeddah, after being thoroughly outclassed and almost stopped in the 12th round of his first clash with the soon-to-be first undisputed champion of the blue ribbon division in 24 years. The scorecards from the initial fight were 117-112, 116-112, and 115-113, all in favour of the Ukrainian. The rematch resulted in a split decision victory for the defending champion, with the scores being 116-112 and 115-13 to Usyk and a generous 115-113 to Joshua.

Usyk will have another rematch to contend with in July, as he goes up against Daniel Dubois for a second time, with the latter’s corner still causing a fuss about the contentious low blow in their first tussle. If Usyk gets past Dubois again and reclaims the IBF trinket, which would make him a two-time undisputed champion, perhaps Fury will be drawn out of retirement once more, and we will have another famous trilogy on our hands. On the other hand, maybe we will finally get Fury vs Joshua at long last.
