‘Floyd Mayweather and…’ – Terence Crawford needs ‘hybrid’ tactics to beat Canelo Alvarez, claims American star

A hybrid approach of Floyd Mayweather and another former champion has been suggested for Terence Crawford in the Canelo Alvarez clash.

Much anticipation has followed the September 13th super-fight with athletes from all sports getting involved, including Leon Edwards, who backs ‘Bud’.

Crawford has never backed down from a challenge, and his undisputed welterweight run is proof enough.

While some are doubting the Mexican’s chances, Canelo has a wealth of experience in his deep resume against the best fighters in different generations to fall back on.

Keith Thurman provides the hybrid tactics that Terence Crawford needs to beat Canelo Alvarez

In analysing the contest, Keith Thurman has given an interesting piece of advice which is based on a former Alvarez opponent.

Speaking with FightHype, the charismatic American star gave a new perspective on the bout.

He said: “Canelo is going to be Canelo; all the variables rely on Crawford. I believe that his tactics and game plan, I hope he works behind that jab, works behind the feint.

“Almost like when Charlo got dropped after he got dropped, he never got dropped again. There is evidence that a nice mover, keeping your hands up, you cannot get hurt by Canelo.”

The Jermell Charlo fight saw the ‘Iron Man’ submit to the whims of the tank that is the undisputed super middleweight champion.

It was a performance that has left Charlo on the sidelines of boxing, having not returned since the 2023 loss, but Thurman believes you can take elements from that plan to make it a success.

He explained: “Now that was not the keys to victory, those were keys of survival… I would like to see a hybrid between Floyd’s tactics and Jermell’s tactics there.”

His comments were capped off by an adage he created when boxers compete against the 67-fight veteran.

“I say this all the time about Canelo, Canelo is not unbeatable, the question is, are you going to beat him?” he laughed.

Keith Thurman called out Terence Crawford after win against ‘flat footed’ Errol Spence Jr

‘One Time’ has always had an immense respect for his fellow American welterweight since their days around amateur tournaments.

But of course, after his legendary beatdown of Errol Spence Jr, the Floridian wanted his shot at the undisputed title.

He said: “I already said I’m next baby, they already know, you want to have great fights, you want to keep selling out, you want great PPVs, Thurman right here baby.

“Thurman has no fear, look, I ain’t flat-footed like that, Crawford is an amazing athlete, we grew up in the amateurs together, we did so much together, I salute that man.”

Of course, Thurman, and indeed no one else, had a chance to fight for the undisputed welterweight titles as the Omaha man moved up a division.

It was the Spence Jr performance and moving up in another weight class that prompted Oleksandr Usyk to call him the best in the world over him.

But he has to traverse the weights for a final time to become one of the greatest to compete in the sport.

Roy Jones Jr and Floyd Mayweather have recently been recently been taking jabs at each other. Initially, Jones Jr told Andre Ward that Sugar Ray Leonard would have beaten ‘Money’ Mayweather.

Mayweather, never to shy away from expressing his feelings, clapped back with a video compilation of Jones Jr’s losses through his instagram story to which Jones Jr has since responded, calling Mayweather out for a fight.

The two legends clearly don’t want to give each other an inch and the beef is heating up. Manny Pacquiao has now shared his take on the situation. The Filipino notably fought Mayweather back in 2015 in what is still the best-selling pay-per-view fight in boxing history (4.6 million buys).

Pacquiao, though, has responded to the situation in his ever-humble manner. ‘Pacman’ pointed out that Ray Leonard and Mayweather are fighters from different eras and he doesn’t like comparison.

I don’t like to compare each other, what we have done. As long as we accomplish something that has inspired the fans, inspired boxing fans all over the world, you’re a contributor of the boxing industry. We can’t compare each other like that. I don’t want my accomplishments in boxing compared with other fighters. I don’t like that.

Pacquiao’s words aren’t surprising, considering he has had the same demeanor throughout his career. He is the only eight-division champion in boxing history and is set to make his return on July 19 against Mario Barrios. Pacquiao could break his own record of being the oldest welterweight champion in boxing history if he beats Barrios.

And ‘Pacman’ was recently asked whether beating Barrios could open the door for a potential Mayweather rematch. Money’ won 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110 when they fought back in 2015. Pacquiao, though, recently claimed that Mayweather is ‘scared to death’ to have a rematch.

As for Floyd Mayweather, he has always been a needle mover. Eight years removed from his professional boxing retirement, he continues making the headlines.

Manny Pacquiao claims Floyd Mayweather will never have a rematch against him.

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao remains the best-selling pay-per-view fight in boxing history. The fight sold 4.6 million PPVs, which is unsurprising, considering Mayweather and Pacquiao were considered the two top pound-for-pound superstars in the sport during that time.

‘Money’ Mayweather won the clash via unanimous decision, with the judges scoring it 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110. Both legends have moved on with their respective careers , with Mayweather now retired and Pacquiao making a comeback at 46 to challenge Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title.

Fans have started speculating whether a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch could be on the cards if Pacquiao beats Barrios. ‘Money’ is now 48, but the fight has the potential to shatter PPV numbers all things considered. However, ‘Pacman’ doesn’t think Mayweather will ever entertain the idea as he believes he’s too scared. He told Covers:

I don’t think Floyd Mayweather will fight me again. He’s scared to death to fight again, that’s what I’m thinking. It’s a huge fight, but there’s a lot of reasons or alibis he didn’t make (the rematch with me). Lots of excuses, I guess.

In terms of accomplishments, both Mayweather and Pacquiao are in their own league. One went 50-0-0 while the other is the only eight-division champion in boxing history. That said, both are closing in on 50 and way past their prime.

Despite that, they are two of the biggest superstars in boxing history and a rematch would inherently generate lots of attention. Mayweather’s final professional bout was in 2017, against Conor McGregor, which he won via 10th round stoppage. The biggest draw in boxing history has since fought Logan Paul, Deji Olatunji, Tensin Nashukawa, and others in exhibition bouts.

As for Pacquiao, he is back in the ring after a four-year hiatus. Pacquiao’s last professional win was back in 2019, against Keith Thurman. ‘Pacman’ is taking on a world champion in Barrios, who is 16 years younger than him, and fans are keen to see how Pacquiao fares at this age.

The July 19 showdown takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Manny Pacquiao’s costly mistake accidentally handed Floyd Mayweather $4 million, years before his comeback

Manny Pacquiao’s fight with Floyd Mayweather was the highest-grossing fight in history, and it even earned Mayweather money years after the fight.

The two all-time greats faced off in one of the biggest fights ever in 2015, as Manny Pacquiao challenged Floyd Mayweather for the unified world welterweight championship.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather generated over $600 million, with “PacMan” earning more than $160 million for his share in the bout.

Mayweather himself earned even more for his share, with his last payday for his clash with Pacquiao coming years later due to talks of a rematch.

Manny Pacquiao handed Floyd Mayweather $4 million for leaking a potential rematch

Two years before his comeback fight with Mario Barrios, Pacquiao revealed that he was in talks with Mayweather for a rematch of their 2015 big-money bout.

In a 2023 interview with The Sun, a then-retired Pacquiao leaked that he was in talks with Mayweather for a massive rematch, eight years after their first and only fight.

However, he clearly made a mistake when doing so, as he broke some sort of agreement the two parties had to not discuss a potential fight before it was announced.

Mayweather revealed that this slip-up from Pacquiao earned him a $4 million payout, in conversation with The Pivot Podcast.

The undefeated former champion said: “When Manny Pacquiao spoke about that [a rematch], he shouldn’t have.

“I’m not gonna say he’s right and I’m not gonna say he’s wrong. Just by him saying my name, they gave me a cheque for $4 million.

“He said my name when he wasn’t supposed to. I said, There’s a time and a place for everything.”

The fee was said to be paid by RIZIN, the Japanese promotion that planned to host the fight in Japan if an agreement was made.

This issue has seemed to put a stop to a rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Very little has been said about the fight since Mayweather’s admission, and with Pacquiao back in professional boxing to challenge for world titles, an exhibition fight with his old foe seems out of the question for the time being.

Manny Pacquiao $4 million blunder happened two years before his comeback fight with Mario Barrios

Two years after his wayward mouth cost RIZIN $4 million, Pacquiao is coming back to the ring for his comeback fight at 46 years old.

Pacquiao chose WBC Welterweight champion Barrios as his opponent, as he hopes to become a 13-time world champion.

The win would make Pacquiao one of the oldest world champions in history and cement his legacy even further as an all-time great.

The eight-weight champion is already eyeing up a bout with Conor Benn if he beats Barrios, although Pacquiao’s lightning-fast punches that made him famous are not what they used to be.

This will undoubtedly be his toughest test yet. An exhibition fight with Mayweather would have been the easier choice, but Pacquiao still has the drive and ambition to become a champion in the twilight of his career.

Floyd Mayweather is arguably the greatest boxer of all time, but he is inarguably the highest-paid boxer ever.

“Money” is the biggest pay-per-view attraction in boxing history, earning hundreds of millions with some of the biggest fights in history.

He retired undefeated, but Floyd Mayweather continues earning big bucks in exhibition fights all over the world.

Here is everything you need to know about Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Is Floyd Mayweather retired?

Mayweather retired from professional boxing in 2017 and transitioned into exhibition fights instead. His final and 50th fight as a professional was against Conor McGregor.

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao

Mayweather fought Pacquiao in the highest-grossing fight in boxing history when they finally locked horns in 2015.

Six years after the pair were originally slated to face off, the two all-time greats battled in a fight that drew criticism from many for being boring.

However, it managed to generate over $600 million, with each fighter earning close to $200 million each.

Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor

Mayweather’s final fight was the crossover clash with Conor McGregor. “Money” came out of retirement to face the former UFC double champion in August 2017.

“Money” was guaranteed a $100 million purse for the fight, but earned even more than that from PPV revenue and other things.

Mayweather surpassed Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 unbeaten record by knocking out McGregor in the tenth round, before retiring with a 50-0 record.

Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez

Canelo Alvarez was handed his first loss in professional boxing when he went down to Mayweather in 2013.

This was a key fight in Mayweather’s late-career dominance, proving he could still beat anyone in the twilight of his career.

“Money” won the fight by a majority decision to keep his own undefeated streak alive at the expense of Canelo’s.

Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul

After retiring from boxing, Mayweather began to have some big-money exhibition fights. This included a clash with YouTuber-turned-WWE wrestler Logan Paul in 2021.

Mayweather outboxed Paul over eight rounds, with his incredible movement negating Paul’s massive size advantage.

While there was no official winner announced, it was clear that Mayweather outboxed Paul throughout.

Former champion answers who would have won if Terence Crawford and Floyd Mayweather fought.

Terence Crawford is perhaps the closest thing to Floyd Mayweather in terms of fighting style among today’s boxers. Both are defensively sound; however, Crawford is more of a knockout threat, as statistics show.

Like Mayweather, ‘Bud’ is undefeated with a 41-0-0 record, boasting 31 knockout wins. Mayweather retired 50-0-0 with 27 stoppage wins.

One might wonder who would’ve won if the pair crossed paths inside the squared circle, and former IBF lightweight champion Paul Spadafora has answered. He notably sparred Mayweather during the latter’s ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ career phase.

Spadafora has nothing but high praise for Terence Crawford. However, he thinks Mayweather’s IQ was something exceptional and believes that would have gotten the job done against ‘Bud’. Speaking on The Porterway Podcast, Spadafora said:

That’s an amazing fight. I mean, Floyd’s IQ is unbelievable. Are we talking about ‘Pretty Boy’ or ‘Money’ (Mayweather)?

When told ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’, the version he sparred, Spadafora backed Mayweather, saying:

I have to go with ‘Pretty Boy’ on that.

Spadafora further recalled his sparring session with Floyd Mayweather, claiming he should have avoided it as it potentially took away his chance of having an actual fight against Mayweather.

Terence Crawford, meanwhile, has always been respectful of Floyd Mayweather and has named him as one of his boxing heroes.

Crawford might take a page or two from Mayweather’s book in his upcoming fight against Canelo Alvarez on September 13. Mayweather famously took a 23-year-old Canelo’s undefeated record back in 2013, and now ‘Bud’ is putting his undefeated status on the line against the great Canelo.

While Alvarez doesn’t have any notable weakness, he has had issues with boxers who have amazing movement. Dmitry Bivol also capitalized on that, being the only other man to beat the Mexican other than Mayweather.

Terence Crawford, though, is moving up two weight classes, meaning it’s important for him to avoid taking a big shot from Canelo. That said, like Mayweather and Bivol, Crawford is an incredible boxer with great movement. Will he get the job done? The questions will be answered in September. The superfight takes place at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Canelo Alvarez delivered a strong opinion about Terence Crawford and Floyd Mayweather.

On September 13, 2025, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be defending his WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF super middleweight belts against Terence Crawford, in what is perhaps the most highly anticipated superfight of the entire year.

While this might be the most lucrative bout of Canelo’s legendary career, the fact that he fought against Floyd “Money” Mayweather back in 2013 makes that this Crawford bout probably isn’t the highest-profile contest he has had. At the time, Mayweather was the face of boxing, and Canelo was an up-and-coming superstar who would have turned the world upside down if he could have secured a victory against the then-undefeated light middleweight champion.

Alas, Canelo came up short against Mayweather (who won via majority decision, with the scorecards reading 114–114, 116–112, and 117–111). However, Canelo going toe-to-toe with Mayweather throughout the 12-round bout surely set the stage for Canelo becoming the boxing superstar that he is today.
Crawford now has an opportunity to become an even bigger star than he already is with a world-class performance against Canelo. And during a June 21 interview with The Sun, Canelo made it clear that he has perhaps an even tougher test against Crawford than he did against Mayweather over a decade ago.

“I think Crawford is better than Mayweather because he turns his guard to both sides, he’s more intelligent,” Canelo was quoted as saying in the article. He then added, “I think he’s better than Floyd Mayweather. That’s what I think.”

However, Canelo also asserted that he’s now better equipped for a fight of his magnitude because of his experience against Mayweather, saying, “I learned in every single fight not just in the Mayweather fight but I learned everything and for every fight.

“I’m gonna put all my experience there because I’m gonna need it.”

Comments like these will only get the boxing community even more excited about this showdown.

Boxing Legend Says He Would Beat ‘Pitiful’ Floyd Mayweather And Manny Pacquiao: “I’m The Greatest”

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao defined a generation in boxing.

Although their 2015 bout took place past the peak of both, the individual periods of Mayweather and Pacquiao’s prime dominance remain a significant chapter of the sport’s narrative.

Mayweather famously retired undefeated, although one fellow Hall of Fame fighter is supremely confident that would not have been the case if he was around, and he added Pacquiao – who has lost just eight times in 72 contests – into the mix, too.

In his autobiography I Am Duran, Panamanian icon Roberto Duran sets the tone early on.

“When I retired I would gladly have beaten the crap out of all the deadbeats in the sport. The same goes with the boxers today: Pacquiao, Mayweather – they’re pitiful. I could have beaten them all.

“People rate me as the greatest lightweight of all time. And why not? I think I am.”

Known for his aggressive, relentless fighting style and formidable punching power, Duran’s prime saw him dominate the lightweight division, where he held the WBA title for several years and successfully defended it numerous times, often by knockout. His ability to apply constant pressure and deliver punishing blows earned him the moniker ‘Hands of Stone’ and a reputation as a truly fearsome fighter.

A fantasy bout with Mayweather would put the American’s defensive skill to the ultimate test, whereas a fight against Pacquiao – with his whirlwind offence – would be an instant classic.

Duran and Mayweather have closed the book on professional boxing, but Pacquiao believes he still has was it takes at age 46 to return and win a world title. He faces WBC Welterweight World Champion Mario Barrios next month.

For Mayweather, beating Mike Tyson is not enough to make Evander Holyfield boxing’s GOAT

Calling an athlete “the greatest of all time” (GOAT) should be analyzed by their performance during the peak of their career and the record they achieved, leaving aside the activities carried out after their retirement. However, Jeff Mayweather has seen how Evander Holyfield’s legacy is often overshadowed, especially when considering that he is a four-time heavyweight champion, surpassing the three reigns of Muhammad Ali.

Naturally, when a legend like Holyfield challenges the narrative, Ali’s great career provokes strong reactions. After all, Ali remains the face of boxing for many. What makes it even more difficult is that some argue that Holyfield does not even surpass Mike Tyson in legacy, despite beating him.

In the midst of this debate, Floyd Mayweather’s uncle, Jeff Mayweather, offered a more measured perspective when asked about Holyfield’s claim, acknowledging his achievements but also pointing out why public perception has not caught up.

Is Evander Holyfield greater than Muhammad Ali?

The Mayweather Channel recently aired an episode featuring the thoughtful yet firm disagreement of Jeff Mayweather who acknowledged Evander Holyfield’s achievements, but also argued that greatness in boxing is not defined solely by titles. “It’s much more than just winning the title with Muhammad Ali, … he was bigger than boxing”. While Evander Holyfield’s argument was based solely on boxing merit, the reporter pointed out a critical flaw: being a four-time champion also means losing the title three times.

Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather

But then the discussion turned to longevity and dominance. “If you were champion once and held the belt for 20 years, aren’t you the best because someone else won it four times?” the reporter asked, challenging the logic. Jeff Mayweather agreed. “But I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem like Holyfield,” he added, hinting that Holyfield’s legacy doesn’t reach the elite of the all-time greats in the public perception. The reporter then pointed out that some fans don’t even rank him among the top five boxers, prompting Mayweather to reflect further. “The only thing I know about Holyfield as a heavyweight is that he beat Mike Tyson,” he said bluntly.

However, Jeff argued that the victory over Mike Tyson does not elevate Evander Holyfield above Iron Mike in the eyes of most fans. When asked if Holyfield was a superior heavyweight to Tyson, Jeff replied: “Well, he’ll never be considered superior to Mike Tyson.” The reason? “Because people will say that by the time he fought Mike Tyson, he wasn’t the Mike Tyson that everyone knows. So he won’t get any credit for that.” It’s a sentiment shared by many who believe that Tyson’s decline (at 30) had already begun when The Real Deal fought him at 43.

Insisting further on the subject, the reporter asked who would win if both boxers had faced each other at their best. Jeff replied: “I don’t know. Mike Tyson was a real beast. I mean, he was really fast. But Holyfield beat him quite easily. But I don’t know. I just think Mike Tyson, his background, the way he grew up made him bigger than anyone else.” So, while Evander Holyfield may believe he surpasses Muhammad Ali in greatness, Jeff Mayweather is not convinced that he even surpasses Tyson.

Canelo Alvarez reveals why Terence Crawford is BETTER than Floyd Mayweather… but vows to learn from infamous loss

CANELO ALVAREZ believes Terence Crawford is a BETTER fighter than Floyd Mayweather – the man who handed him his first-ever loss.

The Mexican superstar was outclassed over 12 rounds by undefeated great Mayweather in 2013 – while only 23 years old.

Fast forward 12 years and Canelo once again faces another undefeated American in Las Vegas – this time Crawford.

The mega-fight – streamed on Netflix on September 13 – has drawn comparisons between Canelo’s fight with Mayweather over a decade ago.

But said in Riyadh: “I think Crawford is better than Mayweather because he turns his guard to both sides, he’s more intelligent.

“I think he’s better than Floyd Mayweather. That’s what I think.”

Canelo bounced back from defeat to Mayweather – who retired at 50-0 in 2017 – to carve out a Hall of Fame career.

But the harrowing points loss is not the the only reason four-division champion Canelo improved so vastly.

He said: “I learned in every single fight not just in the Mayweather fight but I learned everything and for every fight.

“I’m gonna put all my experience there because I’m gonna need it.”

Canelo, 34, defends the super-middleweight titles he regained by beating Cuban William Scull, 32, in May in Riyadh.

Crawford, 37, meanwhile returns for the first time since beating Israil Madrimov, 30, last August to win the 154lb WBA title.

He is unbeaten at 41-0 having won belts from lightweight to super-welterweight – now attempting to become undisputed champ at THREE weights.

And Canelo admitted: “He can use both guards. He can do everything he can counterpunch, move around, he’s a complete fighter.

“He’s gonna be a difficult fight but you know it’s nothing new for me.”
