Cristiano Ronaldo had the perfect response to Germany fans chanting Lionel Messi’s name at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. Despite both halves of football’s greatest duopoly now playing outside Europe – and effectively out of the Ballon d’Or conversation – the rivalry still follows them wherever they go.

Fans continue to hold on to the golden era of El Clasico, where Ronaldo and Messi featured for Real Madrid and Barcelona. Since moving to Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, Ronaldo has often found Messi’s name echoing around stadiums, but he didn’t seem fazed this time. Instead, he let his football do the talking as Portugal came from behind to seal a 2-1 win over Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany and book their place in the Nations League final.

The final will be held at the same venue on June 8, with Ronaldo now just one step away from lifting the trophy for a second time, having already won the inaugural edition in 2019. He’ll face either Spain or France, who meet in the second semi-final on Thursday.

Fernando Signorini: “If Messi had been Brazilian and Neymar Argentine, we would say Neymar is better”

Fernando Signorini was Diego Maradona’s personal trainer during three World Cups, coached Lionel Messi in South Africa 2010, and worked with César Menotti and Carlos Bilardo. In this exclusive interview with Flashscore, he speaks about Messi, Maradone and even about Lamine Yamal, among many other topics.

Signorini speaks very fondly about Maradona, and rejects the widespread idea that he didn’t succeed at Barça, when he started working with Diego “the experience was fantastic, the beginning of a long journey we’ve traveled together. After the injury suffered by Andoni Goikoetxea against Athletic Bilbao (on September 24, 1983), I began working with him. It’s said he didn’t succeed, but Barcelona won three of four championships under him. The one they didn’t win was because Diego didn’t play in 12 matches and Schuster in eight. He had bad luck with his health: hepatitis and a fracture.”

When asked about his memories working with Leo Messi, Signorini says “how can we forget that other genius… who was born to be enjoyed, not explained. If Messi had been Brazilian and Neymar Argentine, we’d say Neymar is better. That’s why we have to be careful with comparisons”, although, “he just needed time; his relationship with Diego was wonderful. “You can’t believe how this dwarf plays,” Diego would say. He was born for this, and it’s inexplicable that he has two brothers who were raised, cared for, and fed the same way, and the other two can’t do with four hands what he does with his left foot. He’s an artist who plays football.”

Signorini refuses to compare Lamine Yamal with Messi, “We shouldn’t push him too hard. He has the world’s expectations on him. I don’t know how far he’ll go. I love watching him play. It’s a matter of taste. It’s perverse to compare them. If you don’t give him anything, why would he demand anything in return? He’s an extraordinary player. I hope he’s happy doing what he does. I hope the system doesn’t tear him apart like it usually does.”

Lamine Yamal will reportedly become the new Barcelona Number 10.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently confirmed that Lamine Yamal’s new contract is already agreed in principle and will be formally signed on the youngster’s 18th birthday.

According to a report, the new contract will come with the No. 10 jersey, made famous by the likes of Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho and currently occupied by Ansu Fati.

Yamal to get No 10

The claim was made by Memorabilia1899, an insider on Barcelona’s kit affairs, who reported that when Yamal puts pen to paper on June 13th, 2025, his 18th birthday, he will also be handed a new squad number.

The number 10 is significant in Barcelona, and not just for its legacy purposes, but also for branding and marketing. After Messi left the club, Ansu Fati inherited the mantle, as he was a fast-rising star that came through the ranks at La Masia.

However, unending injuries have blighted the once promising career, and the Blaugrana are now prepared to move on. Fati is expected to leave the club this summer, despite Laporta’s comments about wanting him to continue. Regardless of the colours the 21-year-old dons next summer, however, he will relinquish the 10 to Yamal, Barca Universal relays.

Yamal-Messi comparison

Left-footedness, dribbling ability, La Masia graduates, young sensations, Barcelona stars—there are many parallels to be drawn between Messi and young Yamal, and the number 10 jersey will join the list.

The comparisons are unending, but the teenager has played it down, stating clearly that he should not be likened to Messi, who, in his opinion, is the best player of all time.

According to Fabrizio on X, Lamine Yamal said, “I’d never compare me with Messi… Leo is the best player ever.”

‘My place is there’ – Football icon sparks Barca comeback buzz.

Football legend Lionel Messi has dropped the ultimate bombshell for fans of the beautiful game – he’s got his eyes set on a sensational return to Barcelona! After lighting up Major League Soccer (MLS) with Inter Miami, the Argentine maestro has reportedly told a family friend that the Catalan club, where he cemented his legacy, is calling him home.

Messi’s Miami magic – but Barca dreams linger

Messi, 36, has taken MLS by storm since arriving in 2023, leading Inter Miami to domestic glory while guiding them to the 2024 playoffs. With one year left on his Miami contract, club co-owner Jorge Mas remains hopeful the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will stick around for a trophy-laden 2025 and star at the grand opening of their new stadium in 2026.

But whispers of a return to Barcelona refuse to die down. Family friend Yanina Latorre fanned the flames, telling La Nacion: “He [Messi] told me that when he finishes here [in Miami], where he is happy, he will return to Barcelona.” When pressed on the possibility of staying longer in Miami, Messi reportedly shut it down, saying: “No, my place is there.”

The bigger picture: unfinished business at Barca

For Messi, Barcelona is more than a club – it’s home. Forced to leave in 2021 after financial turmoil rocked the Camp Nou, Messi’s departure for Paris Saint-Germain broke hearts across Catalonia. But a return – in any capacity – would bring his legendary story full circle.

Lionel Messi

While a playing comeback could be complicated by Barca’s ongoing money troubles, an ambassadorial role could see Messi back in Blaugrana colours, off the pitch if not on it.

Inter Miami not giving up on Messi without a fight

Jorge Mas remains optimistic, insisting Messi will be at the heart of Inter Miami’s plans for the future. “Leo and I will sit down to discuss the future,” Mas said at the close of 2024. “I fully expect that in the opening of our new stadium in 2026, and the start of another successful MLS season, Leo Messi will be our No. 10.”

What’s next for the GOAT?

With one last MLS campaign to go, Messi faces a crossroads. Will the lure of a hero’s return to Barcelona prove irresistible, or can Inter Miami persuade their talisman to stay for another chapter in sunny Florida?

Whether he returns as a player, an ambassador, or simply to soak in the adoration of the Camp Nou faithful, Barcelona fans will be waiting with open arms. Messi to Barca? Watch this space!

Ronaldo penned a heartwarming birthday message to his longtime girlfriend on social media.

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his long-time partner, Georgina Rodríguez, in the sweetest way as she turned 31.

The 39-year-old Portuguese football icon took to Instagram on Monday to share a heartfelt message dedicated to Georgina, with whom he has been in a relationship for nine years.

Ronaldo posted a gym selfie of the pair looking cosy alongside a touching caption that read: “For the mother, partner, friend, my wife… Happy birthday, love. Your light illuminates us and your love is contagious.”

The post quickly went viral, racking up over 8.5 million likes within hours.

Georgina, never one to shy away from expressing her affection, left a sweet comment under the post.

She wrote: “Love you and I really love what we are together. Te mucho.”

The model also shared glimpses of her special day on her own social media, flaunting luxurious birthday gifts and a stunning cake fit for the occasion.

The celebrations offered Ronaldo a brief moment of relaxation following Al-Nassr’s 3-1 victory on Sunday.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored in the game but was visibly frustrated after having another goal ruled out for offside. Despite the tension on the field, Ronaldo appeared all smiles as he enjoyed Georgina’s birthday festivities.

Ronaldo returns to action for Al-Nassr in their Saudi Pro League clash against Al-Raed on Thursday.

For now, the focus remains on love, laughter, and celebrating the woman who has been by his side for nearly a decade.

Arsenal have been urged to splash the cash on a world-class striker valued at £80 million during this January transfer window

Arsenal are racing against time in the January transfer window, with no new additions to the squad despite manager Mikel Arteta’s public admission that reinforcements are desperately needed. The Gunners are grappling with significant injuries and suspensions but have admirably maintained their unbeaten record in the Premier League during this challenging period.

Key players Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus have been sidelined, with Saka expected to return in late February and Jesus ruled out for the remainder of the season following an ACL injury sustained against Manchester United in the FA Cup. These setbacks have left Arsenal short of options in attack as they continue their push for silverware.

Arteta has made no secret of his desire to bolster the squad. “We lost two very, very important players, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. So we lack goals, we lack people, we lack options in the frontline—it’s clear,” he said. “Ideally, we need some help. We were short already, and now we are even shorter. The team still copes with that, but we have to do what is right for the club.”

The Arsenal manager emphasised that any signing must have a genuine impact. “Any player? No. [It has to be] someone that makes us better and has an impact on the team,” Arteta added.

Arteta reportedly has his sights set on Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko to address Arsenal’s attacking concerns. However, both deals appear challenging. Newcastle United are unwilling to entertain offers for Isak, who has been instrumental for them this season, while RB Leipzig could still be convinced to cash in on Sesko if Arsenal make the right offer.

Erling Haaland

Recent reports suggest Arsenal are considering a £60 million move for Sesko who has drawn comparisons to Erling Haaland. The 21-year-old Slovenian striker who has scored 14 goals and provided eight assists across all competitions this season, has expressed his individuality despite comparisons to the Manchester City star. “I already said that I’m my own player. The only thing we have in common is height and speed, but our styles of play are different,” Sesko told ESPN in 2023.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Sesko would be a crucial addition for Arsenal. Speaking on “Transfer Deal or No Deal,” Carragher said, “Deal—they need to sign a center-forward, otherwise they won’t win the Premier League.”

Arsenal are also monitoring Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, who is reportedly valued at £65 million. However, Carragher expressed skepticism about the Brazilian’s fit for Arsenal, saying, “He’s a good player, but I’m not sure I’d be paying £65 million for him. I’m not sure where he plays for Arsenal.”

Manchester United would consider a move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen if his season-long loan at Galatasaray could be transferred to another club in January, according to ESPN journalist Mark Ogden.

The Red Devils are believed to be exploring reinforcements for Ruben Amorim’s frontline late in the winter window but would only entertain a temporary deal for the Nigerian international at this stage of the season.

According to Ogden, Napoli might agree to loan Osimhen to another club if it included a permanent transfer at the end of the season – a deal United are not currently pursuing.

Furthermore, there would be no more affordable option to secure the 26-year-old’s permanent arrival than his release clause, reportedly set at €90m (£75m).

Man Utd Could Consider Osimhen Move

According to Ogden, a permanent deal for Osimhen is not a priority for United, even though Napoli’s interest in Alejandro Garnacho could potentially pave the way for a move for the Nigerian international.

The Red Devils reportedly need a goalscorer ‘to get through until the end of the season’ and would only consider Osimhen on a temporary basis:

“Sources have said Manchester United would consider a move for Osimhen if the Nigeria international’s season-long loan at Galatasaray could be transferred to another club during the January window, but the 26-year-old’s parent team, Napoli, would likely consider such a prospect only if it meant a permanent transfer. That would rule United out.

“With Osimhen under contract at Napoli until June 2027, and a reported release clause coming into play in the summer, there would be no inexpensive option to do a deal.

“However, with Napoli rivalling Chelsea for United winger Alejandro Garnacho this month, creative negotiating could open up the prospect of a deal for Osimhen.

Victor Osimhen

“A permanent deal for Osimhen is not a priority for United, however. They simply need a goal scorer to get through until the end of the season.”

Osimhen, labelled ‘world-class’ by Jose Mourinho, has been flying in Turkey this season, scoring 16 goals and registering five assists in 20 appearances across all competitions.

The 26-year-old was strongly linked with a Premier League move last season and was considered seriously by Chelsea before they decided to put their faith in Nicolas Jackson up front.

Man United are expecting at least one new signing before the transfer deadline on 3 February, with Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu among their targets.

The Danish international is reportedly keen on joining United, but the two clubs remain apart on terms, with Lecce’s €40m (£33.6m) valuation currently too steep for the Red Devils.

Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has urged his old club to sign Victor Osimhen on loan this January transfer window.

According to Ferdinand, Osimhen will help Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as both strikers will learn from the Galatasaray striker.

There have been calls for Man United to bring in a new top striker before the January transfer window shuts down in the next few days.

Hojlund and Zirkzee have not really live up to expectations at Old Trafford and Ferdinand wants the Red Devils to get Osimhen immediately.

“I have watched Hojlund closely the last two games… it just doesn’t add up,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel.

“I’d be going to get Osimhen now if we can do it from a financial standpoint. Get him on loan now!

“Guarantees you someone who can get on the end of things, scores goals, experienced, done it at the top level.

“I just feel like because Hojlund was £70m-odd we’re expecting the finished article. Unfortunately [he is not]. He’s a young striker but normally a striker of that age comes in and learns off someone. He’s got nobody to learn off.

“He’s looking at [Joshua] Zirkzee whose like him. They both need someone to learn what it takes to be a Manchester United No.9.”

Osimhen is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Serie A side, Napoli.

Manchester City’s striking duo have been connected for the first time on the pitch as Erling Haaland issued a message to new arrival Omar Marmoush after his debut.

Pep Guardiola’s players were forced to come from behind after an early setback in Saturday evening’s contest with Chelsea, showing exceptional mental strength and fight to secure a huge three points in the chase for the Premier League’s top-four positions.

Abdukodir Khusanov’s full Manchester City debut got off to the worst possible start as the 20-year-old played a poor header into the path of Nicolas Jackson, who slotted it to Noni Madueke to convert and give Chelsea the lead.

The Uzbek youngster would come back from his difficult start and show composure in the rest of his outing, while Omar Marmoush offered a different dimension to Manchester City’s attacking line in his own debut.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Saturday evening’s 3-1 win over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium, Erling Haaland admitted that it is clear the Egyptian forward has ‘something special’, and that there are clear reasons why the club invested in the 25-year-old’s services this month.

“You can see he has something special, there’s also a reason why Manchester City bought him. He has something special,” Haaland told broadcasters at the Etihad Stadium after a win that thrust the club into the Premier League’s top-four.

Haaland continued, “He got straight in the team and it’s about getting to know him as quick as possible, giving him confidence, he’s going to be a fantastic player for us.

“He had an amazing first-half of the season for Eintracht Frankfurt and hopefully he’s going to have the same season for Manchester City now in the second-half of the season.”

Erling Haaland

Goals from Josko Gvardiol, Erling Haaland, and Phil Foden would secure the three points for Manchester City, as their attentions turn towards the midweek clash with Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League.

Manchester City are aware that only a victory will secure themselves of a place in the play-offs for the last-16 stage of the competition, although they will once again have to compete without any of their new signings, including Omar Marmoush.

All of the new names are unable to be registered in the club’s European squad list until the next stage of the tournament, and as such Pep Guardiola will have to call upon other options including John Stones in defence.

Nigerian and Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen, has reportedly sued the Turkish journalist who accused him of assault.

This is according to a post shared on X by Osimhen’s close friend and radio on-air personality, Onokala Onyebuchi known as ‘Buchi Laba’ on Sunday.

“Victor Osimhen has officially sued the journalist that accused the Nigerian international of hitting him. The case officially will start in court tomorrow,” Buchi Laba wrote.

“Like Victor said, if he hit him, he (journalist) is going to get justice, and if he lied, he is going to see the wrath of the law.”

To elaborate further, Buchi said Osimhen didn’t go out to party; he went out with his close friends to an African restaurant to eat, and these reporters rushed on him.

He said the Super Eagles striker told them if they wanted an interview, they should have asked.

“He never hit them. Why spoil his name?” asked Buchi. “He did not go to a club; he went to an African restaurant. You don’t go to clubs wearing a hoodie.

“He did not hit the reporters; he told them not to disturb his private time. I get the rivalry between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, but lying on Osimhen is very shameful.”

Osimhen had also, in a video posted on X, clarified the situation, saying that he never hit the reporter as alleged.

The Nigerian international spoke after scoring a penalty that helped Galatasaray secure a 1-0 victory over Konyaspor in a Turkish Super Lig game at Rams Park on Saturday.

“I went to eat with my friends, so I was coming back to go into my van, and these guys just popped out from nowhere with a camera in my face, and I was shocked,” Osimhen stated.

“Obviously, you guys have seen the video on the internet. I was like this; I was shocked. And I was asking them, what is the problem? Why did you pop out with a camera in front of my face? And they said they are paparazzi. ‘Okay, what do you want?’ They didn’t say; they just put the camera on my face, and there was a guy taking pictures.

Victor Osimhen

“And then my friends went to meet them and said you cannot do like that. You are professionals; you have to come if you want to ask for an interview. I never punched this guy; I never hit him or something like that.

“I went to him; I was in the midst of them, and I told him, you have to take the picture down. You have to delete it; it is my picture; I have every right to tell you to take it down. And then, of course, his agenda. I am not new to this type of thing. I knew they were gonna lie and lie and lie.

“And this is a case of violence, and he came out to lie. Of course, it is not gonna be easy. I don’t need to shout, but I will take the necessary step to make sure… if I hit him, he is going to get justice; if he lies, then he is gonna see the wrath of the law.”
