Trainer Robert Garcia has a clear winner in Manny Pacquiao vs Gervonta Davis.

Manny Pacquiao ends his four-year hiatus from the boxing ring as he takes on Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title on July 19 in what will be his first appearance since the 2021 defeat to Yordenis Ugas.

There have been questions regarding Pacquiao’s decision to come back at the age of 46. ‘Pacman’, though, is taking things seriously and is his camp is even eyeing Gervonta Davis as a potential next opponent.

‘Tank’ Davis, meanwhile, is one of the most vicious knockout artists and entertaining fighters in boxing at the moment, boasting a professional record of 30-0-1 with 28 knockouts under his belt. Davis looks set to face Lamont Roach in a rematch next.

Both fighters are big names, and despite Pacquiao fighting two weight classes above ‘Tank’, the talk regarding a potential clash continues on. And now, trainer Robert Garcia has given his honest verdict on the clash.

Speaking to ESNEWS, Garcia said:

Manny is gonna fight ‘Tank’ after that [Barrios]. Catchweight, 43 or 44. I think ‘Tank’ [wins that fight]. This is a big f*cking fight. It’s a huge fight.

Manny Pacquiao, for now, needs to take care of business against Mario Barrios. At 30, Barrios is a lot younger and standing at 183 cm, he holds a 17 cm height advantage over Pacquiao.

Pacquiao is one of the greatest boxers to ever live, and has amassed a stellar record of 62-8-2 with 39 knockout wins. He remains the only boxer to become an eight division world champion. However, he hasn’t won since the 2019 split decision against Keith Thurman and has fought just once in the last four years.

Forgive Frank Martin for being a bit chippy about Gervonta Davis’ underwhelming performance against Lamont Roach.

Martin fought Davis in June 2024, running up against arguably the best version of “Tank” to grace the boxing ring yet. Martin landed his desired offense in the first three rounds, as Davis made his customarily slow start. Then Davis began walking Martin down with ruthless impunity, stalking him across the ring and into corners.

In the eighth round, Davis clubbed Martin with a left uppercut against the ropes that he didn’t see, leaving Martin out on his feet, frozen and glassy-eyed. Another clean left hand sent him sprawling to the floor for the count.

Davis had a sterner test against Roach this March. Roach countered his counters, took his shots, and even backed up the WBA lightweight titleholder. Roach earned a draw, with the majority of viewers thinking he deserved the nod.

Martin believes the closer fight was due to Davis underperforming, as well as Roach having the night of his life.

“Roach came out and fought his best fight that he could possibly fight,” Martin told Ron Goodall of FightHype. “He came in with his A-game […] I feel like Tank fought that fight not fully, fully trying to get off. He fought him more relaxed and chill, instead of trying to get him up out of there. I think that he thought the fight may have been easier than it was.”

The biggest source of controversy in the fight was Davis taking a knee in Round 9 after taking a jab to the face from Roach. Davis raced to his corner, where a trainer wiped his face with a towel. (After the fight, Davis said his eyes were stinging from hair grease running into them.) Referee Steve Willis began counting, as is standard when a fighter takes a knee, but did not call a knockdown or disqualify Davis for receiving corner assistance mid-round.

Martin alleged that Davis was the beneficiary of A-side bias.

“It was a close-ass fight,” he told Goodall. “I feel like the draw was cool. But with him taking a knee? Like I say, Tank know, they’re gonna give it to their man. They’re gonna give it to the guy who bringing it all the money.”

Asked whether Tank fought better against him than Roach, Martin said: “For sure. For sure, for sure. Hell yeah. I felt like he was a lot more locked in for me than [he was for] Roach. Roach is a good fighter, but I just felt he was more locked in for me. When you fighting a puncher, fighters who can punch, you’re gonna be more on your shit. You’re gonna be more on your A-game. Because you know a guy can catch you with something. He probably didn’t feel the same way when he fought Roach.”

As for the August 16 rematch between Tank and Roach, Martin favors Davis: “I think the rematch is going to be a good fight, but I think Tank may get him up out of there this fight.”

Martin is also willing to fight Roach, and he took a subtle jab at Roach’s well-publicized celebration tour following the fight – which may have been a moral victory, but was not an actual victory.

“I’m willing to fight him for sure, with his big head-ass,” Martin said.

It is amazing to see how a man in his mid-forties is so passionate about what he calls his career as a boxer. This man is Manny Pacquiao, and he is not stopping. After his comeback, when he was away for almost four years, it was as if he was feeding on something that suddenly gave him the strength to challenge anyone he felt like fighting. His loss in 2021 against Yordenis Ugas might have hit him hard. During his time off, when we thought he had retired, he was planning a whole fight segment to show the world that even past his prime and during his retirement years, he could still make it happen.

He wants to be in that boxing ring

Retirement is a chapter closed for many sports players, and usually, there is an age for it. While some pursue other professional careers in business or in the corporate world, some come back and coach upcoming players. However, it does not look like this concept or equation applies to Manny Pacquiao. When we thought he had other plans, he had other plans, and that was to get back into the ring.

To a certain extent, this is not surprising. He took part in a boxing exhibition in July 2024 against Rukiya Anpo at Super RIZIN; therefore, the attachment was something that was quite evident; hence, there were rumours about his comeback. While we are aware now why he came back, the question remains: why now? Why not a year after his fight with Yordenis Ugas?

Manny Pacquiao: He can’t take his eyes off Gervonta Davis

The first fight has not begun yet, and he is already thinking about his next opponent. We are not even sure if he will win because Barrios is 29 years of age, in his prime, with so much strength and endurance; chances are very low for Manny Pacquiao to win this battle. ‘Pac-Man’ and reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios will challenge each other on July 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While that is already set and confirmed, Manny seems to be planning and has claimed that he wants to fight and face Gervonta Davis. Has he won this fight with Barrios? No. Is there a chance that he will win? We do not know, although there are some doubts about it. His level of confidence is good and unrealistic too because him targeting men in their prime could just embarrass him and knock him down. He expressed that,

Why is Manny Pacquiao back?

I think he wants to prove a point. That could be, but just because he is “old” does not mean he cannot fight or win or acquire a championship. Additionally, Pac-Man returns to boxing seeking the WBC Welterweight Championship. Because he is one of the greatest boxers, his pride has led him to think he can have it all. He wants to become the oldest welterweight champion of all time.

Manny Pacquiao wants to make history. He wants to leave a legacy; it is something he is hungry for. However, it is concerning because could this be one of those unexpected wins and celebrations in the boxing world, or will it be a farewell tour, or even worse, a smack in the face? What we are sure about right now is that we cannot stop him. He has a fire burning so much that he is not looking at the age of his opponents; rather, he is looking at the skill he has acquired and plans to utilise it in a way that modern boxers might have to stop and rethink their place in the sport.

Mayweather doubts Gervonta Davis against Manny Pacquiao: “After seeing Tank’s performance…”

Manny Pacquiao refuses to stay retired and rumors about his return to the ring are growing stronger. At 46 years of age, the former eight-division world champion seems determined to come back in force, and not just for one last fight, as was originally supposed.

This was confirmed by the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC)Mauricio Sulaiman, who revealed that ‘Pacman’ will face Mario Barrios for the welterweight title on July 19

The announcement surprised both fans and analysts, who are now wondering what will happen if Pacquiao wins the belt, as it is not known how much longer he could remain active or who his future rivals would be.

However, during a press conference in Las Vegas, Pacquiao said he will make decisions about his future after the fight with Barrios, leaving the door open to the option of facing big names such as Ryan GarciaDevin Haney and even Gervonta Davis.

When is Manny Pacquiao vs Gervonta Davis fight?

This last possibility has especially caught the attention of fans, who are already speculating about a fight between the Filipino veteran and the undefeated Davis, known as “Tank”.

With the growing expectation for Pacquiao’s returnJeff Mayweather, former boxer and uncle of Floyd Mayweather, spoke about a possible duel between Pacquiao and Davis, raising the question of the agreed weight.

“What weight are they going to fight at? I think that’s going to influence a lot. Isn’t Pacquiao going to fight Barrios at 147 pounds or something like that?”Jeff asked, stressing that Gervonta Davis has never fought above super lightweight.

Davis, currently at the peak of his career, would be the clear betting favorite due to his youth and fitness. However, Pacquiao, despite the inactivity and age difference, as he is 16 years older than Davis, has a long experience on the big stage.

Who is the favorite in Pacquiao vs Davis?

Despite the favoritism towards Davis, Jeff Mayweather believes that the outlook is not as clear as it seems, especially after the American’s most recent performance

In March, Gervonta Davis had a tough fight against Lamont Roach Jr., which ended in a majority draw, leaving doubts about his performance.

“I think most would have thought that Pacquiao would have no chance, if it wasn’t for that bad performance by Tank,” said Mayweather“After that fight, believe me, there will be a lot of people who will say that Manny Pacquiao has a chance,” he concluded.

For now, nothing is confirmed, but the possible return of Pacquiao and his willingness to face the best of today is one of the most relevant topics in the boxing world.

Lightweight superstar Gervonta “Tank” Davis is putting his WBC belt on the line this weekend against WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Lamont Roach Jr. The lightweight showdown is going down at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and, as expected, ticket prices are soaring for the highly anticipated fight.

Davis vs. Roach Fight Date, Start Time

Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach is scheduled for Saturday, March 1. The event begins at 8 p.m. ET.

Keyshawn Davis isn’t holding out hope for a lightweight unification bout with Gervonta “Tank” Davis materializing anytime soon.

“I ain’t going to lie, I think Tank is just thinking on a different stratosphere right now. I feel like he’s definitely chasing that Jake Paul fight,” Davis told Uncrowned’s “The Ariel Helwani Show” on Wednesday.

“Tank wants to just do things differently at this point. I don’t think he really wants to fight us fighters. … I don’t really think he’s paying attention to us at this point. He’s trying to get his rematch [with Lamont Roach] settled, get his respect back in the sport, and then go fight Jake Paul and maybe do an exhibition with a WWE fighter or whatever. He’s trying to do things differently so he can get them real big paydays.”

Rumors have floated for months about the possibility of a Tank vs. Paul exhibition bout later in 2025. The two sides were reportedly in talks for a match to take place after Tank’s first fight with Roach, but plans were temporarily halted from the WBA champ’s side in favor of pursuing a Roach rematch.

While many make the case that Tank’s apparent lack of desire to face the top names in the red-hot 135-pound division is bad for the sport, the WBO lightweight champion has a different view on the situation.

“At the end of the day, man, we’ve been doing this for so long, we’re in a position where we need to do what we want to do,” Davis said. “We’ve been doing this for a long time, taking punches for a long time. It’s not easy to go in there in front of millions of people and take punches. [Tank] earned the right to do what he wants to do. Outside of that, he and Jake Paul are going to bring so [many] eyes on the sport of boxing — I think it’s good for boxing.”

When Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally hung up his gloves in 2017, Tank took over as the biggest American attraction in boxing. He’s expected to rematch Roach on Aug. 16 in Las Vegas after their first fight ended in a controversial majority decision draw. In a bizarre moment in the ninth round, Tank took a knee so he could wipe his eyes after complaining that grease from his braids was bothering him. The rules of boxing are clear in not allowing timeouts, though, so the impromptu kneel-down should’ve been deemed a knockdown, which would’ve resulted in the round being scored 10-8 in favor of Roach — meaning Roach would’ve likely won the closely contested fight on all three judges’ scorecards.

“Gervonta, he’s running the show. It’s his show,” Davis said of the controversy. “So it’s hard. At the end of the day, he’s the cash cow when it comes to the [lightweight] division. That’s just what [it is], he’s running the show. It’s going to take somebody to really beat him up or somebody to knock him out for you to get that win, because he’s the cash cow. That’s just how it goes in boxing, which is not right.

“[Lamont Roach] proved a lot of naysayers wrong. He proved all the critics wrong, and honestly, it’s a real 50-50 fight going into the rematch. I just hope he gets a fair decision, even if it’s a close decision.”

Another rival WBO champ Davis believes isn’t particularly keen to share the ring with him is the WBO’s own super lightweight champion, Teofimo Lopez.

After Lopez struggled in a title defense against Jamaine Ortiz in February 2024, Davis — the co-feature on the night — confronted Lopez from ringside about a future fight. Lopez was noncommittal to the matchup, citing Davis’ lack of achievements in the sport as the reason.

The back-and-forth between the pair continued into the fight week of Davis’ title challenge against Denys Berinchyk this past February, when Davis posted on social media he received a package containing bananas and a watermelon at his hotel room. Shortly after, Lopez posted video of him watching Davis’ press conference rant while eating a banana. Although Lopez didn’t directly claim responsibility for sending the package, many — including Davis — assumed the post equated to an admission.

“First of all, Teo needs to stop being racist, period,” Davis said. “His racist antics [are] disgusting. He made a tweet [apologizing] because Turki Alalshikh told him to make the tweet. The only reason I know that is because he put that in the tweet. It wasn’t genuine. He just needs to stop the racist antics, that’s No. 1.

“And honestly, he is ducking me. I can’t speak on Devin [Haney’s failed negotiations with Lopez], but he is definitely ducking me. Turki Alalshikh, I had a meeting with him, and he put Teofimo on FaceTime, and Turki said, ‘Yo, Keyshawn wants to fight you right here. Why do you keep bringing up [welterweight champ Jaron Ennis]?’ Because [Lopez kept saying], ‘Turki, you promised me [Ennis].’ I’m on a FaceTime with him in front of Turki, saying, ‘Yo Turki, you want us to fight? Let’s fight. Let’s make it happen.’

“He’s like, ‘No, no, no, I want to fight [Ennis].’ That was very shocking to me, honestly, that he was so adamant [about] fighting ‘Boots’ over me for the same money, and it’s going to be basically the same type of [fight]. He’s definitely ducking me. I don’t know why he’s scared to fight me, but it is what it is.”

Before Davis can look toward any major names, he has a stern challenge in front of him Saturday at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia, where Edwin De Los Santos ends an 18-month layoff by challenging for Davis’ WBO lightweight title. De Los Santos hasn’t tasted action since a competitive unanimous decision loss to Shakur Stevenson for the WBC lightweight title in November 2023.

Gervonta Davis

Stevenson’s fight with De Los Santos largely failed to entertain, and the performance was subject to plenty of criticism, mostly stemming from Stevenson’s safety-first approach in the bout. With 14 knockouts in his 16 professional wins, De Los Santos has a reputation for being a big puncher, and Stevenson was clearly wary of the Dominican’s power in their fight.

“Heck no,” Davis replied when asked if he was looking to one-up Stevenson’s showing. “When I took this fight, it [had] nothing to do with nobody. I was just looking for an opponent, and Edwin De Los Santos called me out in the media, and I accepted his callout, honestly.

“When it comes to ‘The Businessman,’ I try to stop everybody — and that’s what makes me exciting. I don’t go there and try to box with you. I’m trying to stop you in the most high-value fashion. I always tell people around me, I’m not a fighter that likes to take damage. I don’t take no damage. So if I can go in there and make you miss and make you pay and stop you, it’s perfect.

“Every fight, I feel like it [puts] me a step closer to my first pay-per-view fight — to my first mega-fight when the whole entire world is watching. We just going to keep taking these steps. People are telling me that after I stop De Los Santos, this going to put me right [on top], ‘You’re really going to be that guy.’ I don’t really let none of that get to my head. I just keep fighting, keep knocking guys out, and whatever God’s got for me, that’s what it’s going to be.”

One rival hails Gervonta Davis for continuing Floyd Mayweather’s legacy in boxing and thinks Jake Paul fight is amazing.

Gervonta Davis is a polarizing figure in boxing. Inside the ring, he brings an added layer of excitement that few can match. Outside the ring his personality shines, making him a fan favorite.

However, at times, he might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Given his superstar status, Davis is often called out by opponents in his weight class. And in a bid to grab Davis’ attention, they also ridicule him.

One fighter who has wanted to fight the WBA lightweight champion for a while is the WBO title holder in the division, Keyshawn Davis. Davis, though, had nothing but praise for his namesake in a recent interview with Sean Zittel.

Keyshawn Davis claimed Gervonta Davis kept the excitement factor alive in boxing following Floyd Mayweather’s departure from the sport. He further added that ‘Tank’ fighting Jake Paul would be massive for boxing. Gervonta Davis has been in talks to fight Paul later this year following his upcoming rematch against Lamont Roach.

Keyshawn Davis, who fights Edwin De Los Santos this weekend, said:

I think that him [‘Tank’] going to fight Jake Paul is amazing. I think he should go do that. I think that’s gonna be great for the sport of boxing. It’s gonna get more eyes on the sport of boxing. You got the YouTuber eyes, the casual eyes. ‘Tank’ got a lot of casuals.

He thinks sports fans will be intrigued to see Gervonta Davis vs Jake Paul. Keyshawn Davis then compared ‘Tank’ to Floyd Mayweather, saying:

I talk a lot of sh*t about a lot of people but I am starting to just maturing in this game. At the end of the day, after the Floyd era, Tank carried that torch and made sure boxing was lit for fighters like me…. People are scared to admit that and I’m not. ‘Tank’ did a hell of a job in carrying the torch that Floyd passed on to him.

Gervonta Davis reveals who he considers the greatest boxer in history: ‘I’ll always appreciate him’

Gervonta Davis surprised many with his pick for the greatest boxer of all time. His choice reflects both admiration and a complex personal history.

Undefeated in 31 professional fights, Gervonta “Tank” Davis is widely regarded as one of boxing’s top pound-for-pound stars. Known for his massive drawing power at the gate and in pay-per-view sales, Davis recently had one of the most questioned performances of his career, earning a split draw against Lamont Roach on March 1st while defending his WBA lightweight title.

That result ended a perfect streak of 30 consecutive wins since his pro debut on February 22, 2013, when he knocked out Desi Williams in the first round. Of those victories, 28 came by knockout, a testament to his explosive punching power and reputation as one of the most dangerous finishers in the sport.

Despite his knockout prowess, Tank’s pick for the greatest boxer ever leans toward style and skill over brute force. Gervonta Davis named Floyd Mayweather—the undefeated five-division world champion with a 50–0 record—as the greatest to ever step into the ring.

A relationship strained over time

Davis began his professional career under the guidance of Mayweather, who acted as his mentor and promoter. For years, Davis was seen as Mayweather’s prized protégé. However, their relationship began to fracture during the build-up to Davis’ May 2022 bout against Rolly Romero.

Following his sixth-round TKO victory in that fight, Davis announced he was leaving Mayweather Promotions, stating that he felt it was time to take control of his own career. Mayweather reportedly saw the decision as a betrayal and a sign of ingratitude.

Yet Davis has never denied the impact Mayweather had on his career. After Mayweather was notably absent for Tank’s bout against Hector Garcia in January 2023, he reappeared in Davis’ corner for the high-profile showdown against Ryan Garcia in April, where Davis won by seventh-round knockout.

He just gave me great words. Told me to stay calm,” Davis said at the post-fight press conference. “I always like listening to Floyd when it comes to big moments like this, because he’s the only one who’s been in my shoes and has fought on this kind of stage. He just helped keep me grounded and on the right path. So I’ll always appreciate Floyd for being in my corner and backing me, always.”

Mayweather’s daughter at the center of the rift

While some of the tension stemmed from Mayweather’s limited presence during the Romero fight promotion, Davis recently suggested that rumors about a possible relationship with Mayweather’s daughter contributed to the fallout.

I don’t want to get too deep into that because I don’t want to bring it back,” Davis admitted. “But they were saying I was involved with his daughter because she kept messaging me on Snapchat. She kept sending messages, so someone showed them to Floyd and he lost his mind. These are things people on the outside don’t see.”

Maryland Judge Ends Lawsuit Filed Against Gervonta Davis By Former Manager

A legal dispute between boxing champion Gervonta Davis and his former manager has been settled by a Maryland judge.

According to The Daily Record, Davis, who is the current WBA lightweight champion, won a case filed by his former manager, Wayne Roy, and creditor, Kevin Batiste, that has been ongoing for over 10 years. Chief Judge Gregory Wells ruled that Davis no longer owed Roy any money after he satisfied a default judgment reached in 2019 against the boxer. The fighter paid Roy and Batiste $468,000 in 2022.

The saga began after Davis signed a five-year management contract in 2013 with Roy. The deal stipulated that the fighter would pay Roy 15% of all of his earnings from his boxing matches. That agreement was inked in October. However, in November, Davis acquired new managers, and Roy and Batiste agreed to a settlement arrangement in February 2014, where Davis would be released from the contract signed in exchange for $35,000. That money would be paid within two years.

After not satisfying the settlement deal in 2017, Roy and Bastiste took Davis to court for breach of contract. In their lawsuit, they claimed that Davis only paid them $2,000. After Davis failed to show up in court to respond to the lawsuit the following year, a default judgment was ordered against Davis.

Gervonta Davis

Davis finally paid the duo $468,000 in 2022, but the payment was not reported to the court, and they continued further discovery efforts. Roy and Bastite then claimed a modification provision of the default judgment allowed them to continue discovery to seek payment from the earnings of Davis’s other boxing matches.

The judge disagreed, stating the pair was not entitled to further discovery due to Davis’ payment in 2022.

The boxer is scheduled to meet Lamont Roach for a rematch after a controversial decision after the two met earlier this year. The fight ended in a majority draw for Davis. The contest will take place on Aug. 16 and is slated to be streamed live on Prime Video pay-per-view in Las Vegas, although the venue has not been announced yet.

Manny Pacquiao Sends 4 Word Warning To Gervonta Davis As He Targets ‘Dream’ Fight After Barrios

Manny Pacquiao is just weeks away from making a sensational return to the sport at 46-years-old.

The Filipino icon will challenge reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios on Saturday July 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Pacquiao last fought back in 2021 when he was beaten by former WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas, but the 46-year-old has now set his sights on becoming the oldest welterweight champion of all time.

With rumours circulating that ‘Pac-Man’ is also considering facing lightweight star Gervonta Davis, the Filipino great revealed in an interview with Seconds Out that he would be willing to fight anybody’ including WBA lightweight champion Davis, stating he’s ‘not scared of anybody’.

“I can fight anybody, even like Gervonta Davis … I’m not scared of anybody.”

In a separate interview with World Boxing News, Pacquiao’s promoter Sean Gibbons claimed that a showdown with ‘Tank’ Davis would be a dream fight for the 46-year-old, should he be victorious over Barrios next month.

“When he beats Mario Barrios, line them up. His dream fight is Gervonta Davis. He loves that fight. He tried to get that fight for a couple of years. Gervonta kept talking about how he didn’t want to fight him at 145. Then he goes and gets smoked by Lamont Roach. So Manny Pacquiao can get this belt, and it’s going to be a wonderful ride out.”

Davis is expected to face Lamont Roach Jr in a rematch later this year, after their March showdown ended in controversy following a closely fought contest at the Barclays Center in New York which was declared a split decision draw.
