Gervonta Davis Calls Out Undefeated World Champion In New Weight Class: “Be Ready”

Gervonta Davis looks to be targeting a showdown with an unbeaten world champion who is coming off an impressive stoppage victory.

The 30-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland has enjoyed an impressive professional career to date, remaining unbeaten through 31 outings since his debut back in 2013.

He currently reigns as the WBA world lightweight champion, winning the title back in 2019 when he defeated Yuriorkis Gamboa. ‘Tank’ has made a handful of successful defences along the way, beating the likes of Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios and Rolando Romero.

His most recent defence came on March 1 when he fought to a split decision draw against countryman Lamont Roach Jr, although the result could have been very different had referee Steve Willis ruled an official knockdown during round 9 when Davis touched the canvas.

In a social media exchange with reigning IBF world light-welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins, who made the latest defence of his crown against George Kambosos Jr on Saturday night, ‘Tank’ sent a stern message to his countryman which could set up a clash with the unbeaten 27-year-old from Brooklyn.

“When I see you be ready.”

Hitchins stopped Kambosos with a devastating body shot in the eighth round of their battle at the Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York City to make the second successful defence of his IBF crown.

The 27-year-old could be made to wait for a bout against ‘Tank’ Davis however, with a rematch against Roach expected to take place in August after the events of their controversial first encounter. An official announcement is expected to be made in the coming weeks.

Boxing icon Claressa Shields wants to see one massive superfight take place.

The summer of 2025 is shaping up to be a memorable one for the boxing world, as many of the sport’s biggest stars are making their return to the ring between now and mid-September, when Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will be going toe to toe.

Two of the most compelling fights to come are when 46-year-old Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao faces Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight belt on July 19, and when Gervonta “Tank” Davis rematches Lamont Roach after a controversial majority draw fight earlier this year on August 16.

In addition to the fights themselves being intriguing, the potential implications of Pacquiao and Davis each emerging victorious are fascinating. This is because Pacquiao has asserted that if he looks and feels good against Barrios (and gets a win), he would have an interest in facing off against Davis, so long as Tank beats Roach in their rematch.

It isn’t just male boxers who have a stacked summer schedule. In addition to the highly anticipated trilogy between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano (which will be headlining an all-women’s card at Madison Square Garden on July 11), pound-for-pound great Claressa Shields has a bout slated for July 26, when she’ll face Lani Daniels in a heavyweight title fight at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

Claressa isn’t afraid to make her opinion apparent on social media. And on July 10, she openly speculated about a potential superfight between Pacquiao and Tank Davis.

“This is kinda insane, I feel like If Pac man beats Barrios, that’s gonna set up a fight with him and Tank 🤔 could y’all imagine Pacquiao Vs Tank?” Shields wrote in a reply to a video of Pacquiao jogging.

What’s for sure is that Shields isn’t alone in being interested in this potential superfight, especially if Pacquiao emerges victorious against Barrios.

Gervonta Davis Sends Direct Message To Lamont Roach Jr As Rematch Still Not Official

Gervonta Davis has shared an update on the situation surrounding his rematch with Lamont Roach Jr.

The 30-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland made a defence of his WBA world lightweight title against Roach earlier this year, with the fight ending in a split decision draw after a competitive twelve rounds at the Barclays Center in New York.

The result could have been very different however, after ‘Tank’ took a knee to the canvas during the ninth round after being on the receiving end of a Roach jab which referee Steve Willis failed to rule as an official knockdown. The champion later revealed that it was due to grease from his hair getting into his eyes.

A rematch between the pair is expected to take place in Las Vegas on August 16, with an announcement due in the coming weeks. There have been concerns around the delay in their second encounter being made official however, with both fighters going back and forth on social media in recent weeks.

In a post sent by Davis, the 30-year-old appeared to accuse Roach of holding out for a bigger purse this time around, which has left fans wondering whether the fight is actually going to go ahead.

“You should’ve been on that instead of calling for that $250k, [the f**k] is you waiting on? This bag bigger. THE F**K YOU FORGOT!”

Despite this, ‘Tank’ has also said:

“The plan is still the plan.”

Davis will have his sights set on righting the wrongs of the first fight and proving himself to still be the best lightweight on the planet, ahead of the likes of Shakur Stevenson.

The 30-year-old is also said to be considering a catchweight bout with Youtuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. although it remains to be seen whether this controversial match-up will happen before the end of 2025.

Terence Crawford could defy the odds once again when he faces Canelo Alvarez later this year.

The 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska will bid to become an undisputed champion in a third weight class when he locks horns with the Mexican superstar on Saturday September 13 in Las Vegas.

‘Bud’ has already conquered the super-lightweight and welterweight divisions, becoming the first fighter in boxing history to accomplish this feat within the ‘four belt era’.

He made the move up to 154lbs last August to become a four-division world champion, dethroning WBA super-welterweight champion Israil Madrimov, albeit in an underwhelming performance from the American.

One man who has shared his thoughts on the upcoming mega-fight is WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, revealing to the media that he believes ‘Bud’ is only going ahead with the fight for financial gain.

“Crawford needs the money.

“I’m telling you … That’s why he says he don’t like me, cause I speak real s**t.”

The 30-year-old from Baltimore was then asked if he believes Crawford has what it takes to defeat Canelo, who will be the naturally bigger man on fight night.

“I ain’t trying to convince y’all that he can beat Canelo! He’s a good fighter, but… Bro, I would say smaller fighters are always better than bigger fighters cause they know how to move and things like that.”

Crawford will become the first male fighter in the history of boxing to become a three-weight undisputed champion should he prevail in September, but is faced with unquestionably the toughest test of his stellar career when he steps into the ring with the Mexican icon who has been a dominant force at 168lbs in recent years.

Gervonta Davis has explained why he bizarrely took a knee during his fight against Lamont Roach Jr on Saturday night, saying the “grease” in his hair was “burning” his eyes.

Davis maintained his undefeated record and with it his WBA lightweight title after the fight was scored a majority draw, with the judges scoring the contest 115-113 to Davis, 114-114 and 114-114.

In the ninth round, Davis paused after a jab to the head and then took a knee, before walking to his corner to wipe his face. Referee Steve Willis did not call it a knockdown, despite Roach Jr’s protestations, and none of the three judges recorded it as such.

Davis was subsequently criticised for the move, which some fans on social media claimed should have been ruled a knockdown. Rules state that a knockdown can only be awarded when a fighter touches the canvas with a part of the body that isn’t their feet “as a result of a legal blow or a series of legal blows”, and there was a significant gap between the punch and Davis taking the knee.

Afterwards, Roach said the referee made the wrong call.

“It should have been a knockdown,” he said. “If that was knockdown, I win the fight. He’s saying grease got in his eye, but if he takes a knee and the ref starts counting, it should be a knockdown. It is what it is. I’m not banking on that knockdown to win. I just thought I pulled it out.”

Davis insisted he should have won the fight and that taking the knee may have scuppered his victory, posting later on social media: “They took the fight from me and made it a draw becuz I did that bulls*** knee..but I landed the most punches in the fight..he didn’t even hit me w a punch when I took the knee. I get it though, I shouldn’t have done that but that hair grease was burning my eyes!” CompuBox showed Roach outlanding Davis, despite his fellow American’s claim.

Both fighters called for a rematch. “I want to run it back for sure,” said Roach. “I’ll be back on the grand stage again, where I belong.”

“To be honest, I really made it competitive,” Davis said. “Lamont is a great fighter. He’s got the skills, he’s got punching power. It was a learned lesson. Shout out to Lamont Roach and his whole team. Hopefully we can run it back.”

Eddie Hearn speaks on Shakur Stevenson’s stance about fighting Gervonta Davis.

Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis are two of the biggest names in the lightweight division. Stevenson is the WBC champion while Davis holds the WBA title, and a showdown between the pair is one that fans have been craving for.

Stevenson has also been campaigning for the fight for a while. He’s set to face William Zepeda next month on July 12, while Davis has a rematch against Lamont Roach lined up for August 16.

Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn, Stevenson’s promoter, has now opened up on the potential contest. He claims it’s up to Gervonta Davis and Al Haymon to decide whether ‘Tank’ fights Shakur Stevenson or not. In a recent interview ahead of the Richardson Hitchins vs George Kambosos Jr fight, Hearn said:

I don’t know what Haymon’s gonna want to do with ‘Tank’. He’s got the fight with Roach coming up, that’s a tough fight. But after that, who’s there for him to fight?

Hearn continued:

It’s the same with Shakur. When Shakur beats Zepeda, he could attempt to unify, you got Abdullah Mason, Sam Noakes. You got Andy Cruz, touch wood he wins tonight, he’s gonna fight Muratalla for the IBF world title. So, there’s those unification fights for Shakur. But the fight really Shakur vs ‘Tank’. It’s a case of whether ‘Tank’ and his team are willing to accept that.

When asked what’s the hold up in making the fight happen, Hearn said:

To be honest with you, Shakur is unbelievably humble about that fight. Where he goes, I’m the b-side, I am getting less money, I understand. It’s just whether ‘Tank’ or Haymon wants to give him that fight.

Stylistically, Gervonta Davis vs Shakur Stevenson promises to be a spectacle. ‘Tank’ is one of the best knockout artists in boxing whereas Stevenson is a defensive craftsman. Whether they eventually fight remains to be seen.

Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach reignite controversy over $250K bet before rematch

Prior to the rematch, Lamont Roach demands payment of bet from Gervonta Davis

Gervonta Davis, the WBA lightweight world champion, is just two months away from his eagerly awaited rematch against Lamont Roach Jr. This fight, scheduled for August 16, promises to be one of the most intense of Davis’ career, as he will face what was probably his toughest opponent. However, prior to the fight, a discussion has arisen related to a $250,000 bet that Davis has apparently not paid.

The origin of the dispute dates back to their clash in March at the Barclays Center, where both fighters made a bet for the fight. However, according to Roach Jr.Davis has not kept his part of the deal and asked him to honor the $250,000 he lost in the bet. Davis’ response was not long in coming, but it was blunt: “He’s not going to get anything… let him come and take it,” he said in a message he later deleted.

What happened to Davis and Roach?

The controversy began when Roach Jr. was active on social media during a boxing event and, in the midst of interactions with fans, the exchange of messages between the two appeared. At one point, Davis responded directly: “You should have been on that… instead of calling for those 250k… what are you waiting for? This bag is bigger… what did you forget?!”

The $250,000 bet came up during the final weigh-in before their fight on March 1. According to Roach Jr, it was Davis who proposed the bet, telling him: “I’m going to stop you! Do you want to bet?” To which Roach Jr quickly replied, “250k.” Davis, confident, accepted the bet, but things did not go as he expected. Despite his efforts, Roach Jr managed to take him to the limit and the fight ended in a majority draw, which left many of Davis’ followers surprised.

Roach Jr. himself recalled the bet on the All The Smoke Fight podcast, mentioning that Davis tried to bet that he would knock him out, something that did not happen. When asked if Davis had fulfilled his promise, Roach Jr. replied with a laugh: “He changed his number”.

When will the rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach take place?

Now, with the rematch just around the corner, the focus is not only on what will happen in the ring, but also on whether Davis will finally deliver on the outstanding bet. Tension continues to build as both prepare for the fight, and the war of words between them promises to continue until the eagerly awaited showdown.

Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach: NYSAC acknowledges referee’s error but declines to alter result

Gervonta Davis will keep his unbeaten record.

The New York State Athletic Commission ruled Friday that it will not be changing the result of Saturday’s “Tank” Davis vs. Lamont Roach WBA lightweight title bout.

Boxing Scene — which is owned by ProBoxTV, which co-promotes Roach — was first with the news.

Davis vs. Roach was ruled a majority decision draw (115-113, 114-114, 114-114), however Roach appealed the verdict due to the controversial call made by veteran referee Steve Willis in Round 9.

Davis dropped to one knee in the ninth, seconds after being hit with a left hand from Roach, the reigning WBA super featherweight champion. Willis began to administer a 10-count for Davis after he took the knee, but then inexplicably stopped and ultimately decided not to rule it a knockdown.

Davis said afterward that he took the knee so he could wipe his eyes after complaining that grease from his braids was bothering him, however, the rules of boxing are clear in not allowing fighters to call their own timeouts, thus Davis’ impromptu kneel-down should’ve been counted as a knockdown.

Trainer Robert Garcia has a clear winner in Manny Pacquiao vs Gervonta Davis.

Manny Pacquiao ends his four-year hiatus from the boxing ring as he takes on Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title on July 19 in what will be his first appearance since the 2021 defeat to Yordenis Ugas.

There have been questions regarding Pacquiao’s decision to come back at the age of 46. ‘Pacman’, though, is taking things seriously and is his camp is even eyeing Gervonta Davis as a potential next opponent.

‘Tank’ Davis, meanwhile, is one of the most vicious knockout artists and entertaining fighters in boxing at the moment, boasting a professional record of 30-0-1 with 28 knockouts under his belt. Davis looks set to face Lamont Roach in a rematch next.

Both fighters are big names, and despite Pacquiao fighting two weight classes above ‘Tank’, the talk regarding a potential clash continues on. And now, trainer Robert Garcia has given his honest verdict on the clash.

Speaking to ESNEWS, Garcia said:

Manny is gonna fight ‘Tank’ after that [Barrios]. Catchweight, 43 or 44. I think ‘Tank’ [wins that fight]. This is a big f*cking fight. It’s a huge fight.

Manny Pacquiao, for now, needs to take care of business against Mario Barrios. At 30, Barrios is a lot younger and standing at 183 cm, he holds a 17 cm height advantage over Pacquiao.

Pacquiao is one of the greatest boxers to ever live, and has amassed a stellar record of 62-8-2 with 39 knockout wins. He remains the only boxer to become an eight division world champion. However, he hasn’t won since the 2019 split decision against Keith Thurman and has fought just once in the last four years.
