Simone Biles Refusal to ‘Vault of Death’ Fires Gymnastics Community into Debate: “More Difficult than YDP”

Simone Biles is a straight-up legend, right? The stuff she does in gymnastics is wild, like five moves named after her. One of the insane moves is the Yurchenko double pike vault aka the Biles II. It’s the hardest vault out there, with a 6.4 difficulty score, the highest in women’s gymnastics. She does a round-off on the springboard, a back handspring onto the vaulting table, and then two flips with straight legs. Simone made history by being the first woman to land it at the World Championships, and she even won Olympic gold with it, scoring 15.300, way ahead of everyone else. But here’s a fun thought: what if there was a move Simone straight-up refused to do? And yes she did it!

We all know how wild it is to flip through the air, do two-and-a-half somersaults, and somehow land on your feet, right? Well, this is a move so tough that just trying it can boost a judge’s score, but failing? Yeah, that could seriously be life-threatening. It’s called the “Vault of Death” for a reason. Recently, a video of Yelena Produnova doing this crazy vault from 1999 went viral on X, posted by a user named Pamchenkova. Produnova, a Russian gymnast, debuted the move back in ’99, and while it didn’t win her the gold, it definitely got everyone talking. One wrong move and the gymnast could snap their neck, crack their head open, or even become paralyzed.

The video made the rounds, even the user captioned it, “It’s been 25 years. A quarter-century. I’m starting to wonder if we’ll ever see another double front vault done as well as Produnova’s from the ‘99 Universiade.”

That’s a huge achievement, right? But honestly, it takes major guts to try the Produnova. When Simone Biles was asked by The New Yorker why she doesn’t give it a shot, she flat-out said, “I’m not trying to die.” And of course, when that video hit the internet, fans jumped into a debate about whether the risk is worth it. Some think it’s a move that should still be pushed, while others totally get why Simone isn’t messing with it.

Simone Biles

Fans say Simone Biles could do it but should she? The debate over the deadly vault

One fan pointed out, “When Simone was asked about it didn’t she say she didn’t want to die? Will require a truly fearless queen.” And yeah, Simone is totally fearless, she’s already done the Yurchenko double pike. She’s the only woman to pull off a double pike in competition, which is a huge deal since it involves two somersaults with her body in a piked position. That’s next-level stuff right there.

The Yurchenko double pike is no joke. It’s one of the hardest moves because there’s no backup plan. If you mess it up or are off in the air even a little bit, it could end terribly, landing on your neck or head. And it’s not just vaults like this that show how insane Biles is. Think about her triple-double: it took 15 years for anyone to pull off a move like that after the first male gymnast did the triple-twisting double somersault on the floor.

Another fan added, “Only if Biles does it, well, Biles can do the Dragulescu too.“At 27, Simone continues to push boundaries, like when she performed the YDP move at the 2024 Paris Olympics. But despite her history of pushing limits, she’s decided to say goodbye to her signature moves. In a post on Instagram, she humorously laid her Yurchenko double pike to rest, writing, “Rest in peace Yurchenko double pike 🫶🏾,” while posing in a white tracksuit surrounded by funeral flowers. The Biles II earned her three golds in Paris, but the “Vault of Death”? That’s definitely not on her to-do list. And Dragulescu vault? Big no!

The front handspring double front half-out is called the Dragulescu, after Romanian gymnast Marius Dragulescu, who first performed it in 1999. Rated at a 5.6 difficulty, the Dragulescu is still one of the most difficult vaults in men’s gymnastics, and no woman has ever attempted it in competition. In the 2004 Olympics, Dragulescu earned a 9.900 for sticking the vault, a feat that’s still remembered today.

Another fan added, “This deserves a higher value than the YDP. I am sorry but there is a reason why Simone hasn’t attempted this.” And that’s true- this move is a beast. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, two gymnasts, Oksana Chusovitina and Dipa Karmakar took on the “Vault of Death” in an effort to challenge Simone Biles for the gold. Chusovitina, at that time, was 41, while Karmakar made history as the first Indian gymnast to reach an Olympic final. Despite their bravery, neither nailed the move perfectly, Chusovitina’s landing was risky and Karmakar had a small stumble that cost her a shot at the podium. Nevertheless, they are part of just seven gymnasts who ever have attempted the Produnova.

Simone Biles

Yet neither Chusovitina nor Karmakar was fully successful in executing that move. Chusovitina’s landing was far more dangerous and yet, somehow she was able to roll back up and tumble in a much more elegant fashion. Karmakar, whose coach talked about it last night, “It is a risk that we have to take,” landed on her feet but had a little scoot that might have denied her the bronze.

Another fan added, “I’m sorry but this is more difficult than YDP 🫣 DON’T HATE ME,” while another chimed in, “I really think simone can pull this off but im glad she didnt cuz it might also make a bunch of gymnast compete this even though they cant totally do it😬.”And, you know what, they both are right. The Produnova is of that sort of move which is just on the other level in terms of challenge and danger. The good thing is that Simone has the ability and courage to do that, but she knows it is deadly. It is probably for the best that she has stayed away from it, maintaining a strict schedule of the moves that she can confidently perform and setting new records while doing so.

Simone Biles walked the red carpet at the 58th Annual Country Music Association Awards, debuting a new haircut.

Can you imagine a world in which Simone Biles can’t wear a ponytail or bun while flipping around on the floor and flying between the uneven bars? We didn’t think we could — we didn’t think we wanted to — but after the legendary gymnast attended the CMA Awards in a hairstyle that’s drastically different from her usually long look, we think we can get used to this previously unfathomable new way of life.

Biles walked the red carpet at the 58th Annual Country Music Association Awards, where she debuted a new bob. And not just any bob—a “voluminous ’90s glam” bob, as her hairstylist Justing Revenge called it on his Instagram post about the stunning look. The side-parted style looks lifted and sculpted but soft and smooth.

When Biles changed out of her shimmering, gunmetal, off-the-shoulder gown to present an award in an even more sparkly silver suit, her bob took on a flippier new feel.

And when the record breaker attended the CMA afterparty in a strapless red dress and cowboy boots, it looks like Revenge might have touched up the bob with a quick hit of the flat iron.

If her smile is any indication, Biles is loving her new bob—and so are fans. “I didn’t think you could become even more beautiful than you already are. Your new look is divine!!!!!!!!” said one commenter on Instagram. “Seriously obsessed with this hair 😍,” wrote another fan. Yet another commenter stated in all caps what we’re all thinking: “YOUR HAIR IS PERFECT.”

Suni Lee Breaks Her Silence on MyKayla Skinner’s ‘Work Ethic’ Comments: ‘Annoying’

Team USA gymnast Suni Lee has broken her silence about controversial comments made by former teammate MyKayla Skinner

Lee, 21, addressed a dig made by Skinner, 27, in June, when she said in a since-deleted YouTube video, “Besides Simone [Biles], I feel like the talent and the depth just isn’t what it used to be. I mean, obviously, a lot of girls don’t work as hard. The girls just don’t have the work ethic.”

Skinner and Lee were teammates on the 2020 Olympic team that took home all-around silver in Tokyo.

“We have a lot of love for her, but it’s frustrating to see her put us down because she knows, basically, about every single thing that we’ve all been through,” Lee told Glamour in a story published Thursday, October 3. “It was more annoying because of all the things that I’ve been through.”

In the year leading up to the 2024 Games, Lee was diagnosed with two types of kidney disease.

“I wasn’t able to go to the bathroom,” she recalled to Glamour. “I couldn’t bend my legs because they were so swollen, and my fingers too. My eyes were almost swollen shut. I was like, ‘Something is happening.’”

After months of frustration, Lee called USA Gymnastics cohead physician Marcia Faustin who ultimately helped get her tested and diagnosed.

“It just goes to show the importance of speaking up and advocating for yourself, because if I wouldn’t have, who knows what I would have been doing right now,” Lee said.

Once Skinner’s comments about the 2024 squad caught fire, they became a bit of a rallying cry for the group, who took home all-around gold in Paris.

“Lack of talent, lazy, olympic champions ❤️🥇🇺🇸,” Biles, 27, captioned a photo via Instagram after taking home gold alongside teammates Lee, Jade Carey, Hezly Rivera and Jordan Chiles.

Skinner — who later said her comment was “misinterpreted” and “wasn’t always necessarily about the current team” — returned to social media after Biles’ thinly-veiled jab after winning gold.

“I sincerely hoped that this topic wouldn’t need to be revisited but unfortunately things have really gotten out of hand lately,” Skinner said in a video posted via Instagram August 6. “And it’s one thing to disagree with me regarding something I have said or a point I was trying to make, but it’s something else entirely when that turns into cyber bullying or even worse.”

Skinner continued, “Watching people cheer on the bullying — which has led to threats of physical harm to me, my husband and our daughter — is disgusting. So please at this point, I’m just asking for it to stop for the sake of my family because enough is enough.”

“Hopefully She Plays Nice”: Simone Biles’ Youngest Family Member Baby Biles Has Mother Worried About Recent Decision

The Biles family? Yeah, gymnastics practically runs through their veins. Simone Biles, the GOAT herself, set the stage, and now her sister Adria and niece Ronni are following in her formidable footsteps. Little “Baby Biles” is totally smitten with her legendary aunt, and it’s clear from the endless social media posts her mom shares. In fact, Ronni had her first flight before she was even nine months old—headed straight to the 2023 US Championships to watch her great aunt perform live.

And if you think that was cute, hold onto your heartstrings. Her mom posted a video where Ronni proudly wore a replica of Simone’s iconic leotard, captioning it: “POV: that feeling when you will be in Paris this week & going to the FREAKING Olympics to cheer on TT🥳🤪🥹😍,” The little one has been cheering Simone on from the sidelines in matching leotards, and it’s no surprise that gymnastics has been her path of destiny. But now, it looks like Ronni Biles isn’t sticking to just gymnastics!

This spring, she’s ready to swap her leotard for a soccer jersey, as the two-year-old is set to join a Soccer Shots program for kids aged 2 to 8. Her mom recently shared the news on Instagram, saying, “Ronni is signed up for soccer in the spring. This could be a huge hit or an epic eee. Hopefully she plays nice with others.” With her natural athleticism and Simone as her inspiration, it’ll be exciting to see if she brings the same spark to the soccer field! But the decision still seems surprising, as she had already started taking her first steps toward becoming a gymnast.

After witnessing her TT confirm her ticket to the Paris Olympics, Baby Biles’ love for the sport increased to a huge extent. This made her decide that she would like to follow in her footsteps. Thus, she put on her GK leotard again and started training at her grandparents’ gym, the World Championship Centre in Texas. Sammi Biles, her mother, posted pictures of her taking part in the sport that her aunt has already conquered.

The caption of the Instagram post by Sammi read, “The way she is so intrigued by this sport at such a young age is so special for many reasons.” She continued, “WCC’s littlest elite/honorary member is kidding but ahhh so adorable.” Simone Biles’ niece had fallen so in love with the sport, she was skipping things normal children do, like cartoons, to watch gymnastics instead!

Simone Biles

In another Instagram post, her mother showed Baby Biles mimicking her aunt while watching her perform on television. “Anyone else’s 1.5-year-old skipping cartoons for @USAGym?! Or just ours 😆 not complaining one bit,” read the caption. Thus, after all this, the decision to suddenly join a soccer program might seem a bit sudden. But maybe the athleticism built by her in WCC might help her immensely in kicking the ball and dribbling through her opponents! Time will tell. For now, Ronnie is happy being a fan and adoring her legendary aunt.

Baby Biles even spent time with her beloved aunt Simone Biles during the GOAT tour!

Simone Biles arrived in Houston for the GOAT tour show on October 19th. Everyone was excited to see the prodigal daughter return home after his victory at the Olympics. However, none could match the enthusiasm of Baby Biles finally seeing her aunt again. Sammi Biles recorded the video of the child walking towards the Toyota Center to watch the show and catching a glimpse of Simone Biles on the big screen.

When asked who she was, Baby Biles couldn’t contain her excitement, shouting, “TT!” Her mom jumped in to fuel the energy, chanting along, “TT go! TT go!”—and Sammi couldn’t help but clap along with the enthusiasm. But while everyone else had their eyes glued to the stage, Ronni’s attention was elsewhere.

In a video shared by her mom, little Ronni sat on her dad’s lap, her curious eyes scanning the crowd, trying to catch a glimpse of Simone Biles. It was a full-on “aunt admiration” moment. The concert, designed mostly for kids, turned into the perfect backdrop for Baby Biles to soak in the magic of watching her aunt perform. And you’ve got to imagine, that’s the kind of experience that fuels a love for sports. Whether it’s gymnastics or soccer, well, that’s a whole other story for the future!

Barefoot Wine has announced a partnership with Simone Biles, one of the world’s most decorated gymnasts, for an NFL game day contest experience.

As a public figure with ties to the NFL through her husband, Green Bay Packers player Jonathan Owens, Biles brings both her personal connection to the game and her own sporting prowess to Barefoot’s campaign.

As the official wine sponsor of the NFL since 2022, Barefoot is offering an opportunity for one contest winner and three friends to join Biles for the 17 November Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears game. The chosen winner will enjoy “pregame sideline access” before setting into Barefoot’s“BandWAGon Box” suite, a premium viewing area hosted by Biles, where Barefoot wines will be served.

Through the gymnast’s presence, Barefoot aims to make the NFL – and wine culture – more accessible to fans across all backgrounds.

“You don’t need to know every play, or every grape to enjoy both,” Biles noted. “It’s about kicking back and having a great time together.”

While the campaign strikes a lighthearted tone, Biles has faced considerable negativity online. From the difficult decision to withdraw from Tokyo 2020 to scrutiny over her marriage to Owens—where critics on social media have accused him of “riding her fame”—Biles has recently turned to Instagram to showcase her positive outlook on life and embrace joy unapologetically.

Barefoot, which is owned by E&J Gallo, sponsored last year’s Super Bowl, the biggest fixture in the world of NFL, attracting an estimated 113 million viewers.

Simone Biles Returns to Gymnastics Following Uncertain Future as Gold Over America Tour Concludes

After bagging three gold medals at the Paris Olympics, stealing the show at the Gold Over America Tour, and even winning a Critics’ Choice Documentary Award for Simone Biles: Rising, Simone Biles is back! But here’s the thing—where does her heart truly lie? Despite all the success off the mat, Simone recently shared a story on Instagram, letting us know she’s back at it, training at the World Champions Centre, the gym her parents own. And she shared a motivational poster with the words, “The world is yours.” It looks like she’s gearing up for something big!

Now, here’s where it gets interesting: why is she training again? Is she eyeing the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics? Her future in gymnastics isn’t exactly clear, but it’s hard not to wonder—will she make a comeback?

‘Simone Biles Rising’ Takes Home Two Critics Choice Awards

The limited series has reached the top of the charts—and now earned several accolades, too.

Where Simone Biles was concerned, fans had high expectations for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The world waited with bated breath to see how the 27-year-old would perform in her return to the international stage. Almost everyone knew the story of the Tokyo Games. Days into the competition, the athlete had to withdraw from the competition with a case of the “twisties.” In the years after, she took a break from competitive gymnastics. But 2024 marked her return to the mat—and an impressive return it was.

Her impressive success in competition ahead of the Olympic trials was only one piece of the hype surrounding Biles’s name. As the Olympic competition approached, expectations for her comeback only intensified with the release of part one of her Netflix documentary, Simone Biles Rising.

The first two episodes of the limited series came out in mid-July, just weeks after Biles had cemented her spot on the 2024 Olympic roster. And the release really couldn’t have come at a better time. In the first part, the gymnast reflected on her experience in Tokyo, the pressure she faced then (and continued to face in the lead-up to Paris) and how her past experiences were shaping her approach to the future.

In other words, it was the perfect set-up for what ended up being a perfectly executed comeback. Biles (and the producers) couldn’t have known as much when the documentary was released. But her outstanding performance in Paris (which resulted in three gold medals and one silver) really drove home the message in part one of the documentary—a message of setbacks, perseverance and, ultimately, comebacks.

Part two, which was released only a few weeks ago, doubled down on that message. It took a closer look at Biles’s preparation for the Paris Games, in particular, and her ambitions for her return to the international stage.

In the weeks since the release, Simone Biles Rising has quickly become a crowd favorite—for all of the reasons mentioned above and more. But we’re not simply referring to its ability to reach second place in Netflix’s Top 10 rankings. We’re likewise referring to its latest feat: taking home not one, but two awards at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards on Nov. 10.

At the ninth annual ceremony, the documentary earned the awards for both Best Sports Documentary and Best Limited Documentary Series, cementing it as one of the foremost documentaries of the moment. More than anything, though, the achievement only reinforced the fact that Biles is an inspiration.

Simone Biles & Jonathan OwensDate Night Kiss… At Chicago Bulls Game

5 adorable photos of Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens sitting courtside at a Timberwolves-Bulls game

Following a historic run at the 2024 Paris Olympics, gymnast Simone Biles is living her best life.

Simone spent some well-deserved quality time with her husband, Bears safety Jonathan Owens. The pair attended a Timberwolves-Bulls game Thursday at the United Center. Chicago unfortunately lost, but that didn’t stop the couple from having a good time.

The Bulls’ mascot, Benny the Bull, presented them with some awesome custom jerseys and dope oversized bull chains. ( Stop it. This is TOO wholesome.) Thankfully, some genius photographers also captured several adorable photos of Simone and Jonathan canoodling during the game.

Simone Biles Becomes Coach Cecile Landi’s Way to Earn Special Honor From USA Gymnastics

Simone Biles has carved her path to the legendary G.O.A.T. status. But the Landis definitely helped the 27-year-old make the steep climb. Cecile Canqueteau-Landi and Laurent Landi were looking for a new beginning in 2017, and as luck would have it, so was the gymnast. When she needed new coaches and guidance the most, Cecile stepped forward, and like they say, the rest is history.

Landi was more than just a coach to the Olympian. She was more like family. After a harrowing experience at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 27-year-old decided to step away from the sport. But once she was ready to return to the mat, Biles knew her coach would have her back. It is that support, understanding, and determination that many witnessed at the Bercy Arena. Cecile Landi and the 27-year-old make a power-packed duo. But as the dust settled on the Paris Games, Landi received a sweet surprise. Any guesses on what it could be?

A heartwarming surprise

This season has been incredible for the gymnast. She triumphantly returned to the world’s grandest stage, but she left the French capital with 4 more shiny Olympic hardware. Throughout it all, Cecile Landi was right by her side. Even though the Games are long gone, USA Gymnastics recently gave the coach her flowers. On November 8, she shared a snippet of the letter from USOPC Coaching’s Christine Bolger and the order of Ikkos she received on her Instagram story, captioned, “Feeling grateful ❤️🤍💙 Thank you @simonebiles“
According to the heartwarming note, the USOPC congratulated the coach for guiding the gymnast through the U.S. Olympic Trials and to several podiums in the French capital. The G.O.A.T. did face a huge mental block while contesting in the trials, as we witnessed in Episode 3 of Simone Biles Rising. With many gymnasts succumbing to their injuries, the 27-year-old was terrified, thinking she could be next. When Cecile Landi noticed this, she tried her best to smoothen things out.

The coach promptly asked the gymnasts to focus on themselves and not look around. But even she knows that this was easier said than done. In fact, Simone Biles stepped onto the mat to compete, and Landi shouted words of encouragement. She consistently reminded each of them what they were capable of. So, why shouldn’t this effort be recognized? But here’s the kicker. The Order of Ikkos program was established to allow the members of Team USA to appreciate a coach that has been influential in their Olympics or Paralympics journey.

“The unique honor is bestowed upon coaches only by their Olympic and Paralympic athlete(s) and you have been recognized as a recipient. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that the USOPC presents to you the Order of Ikkos on behalf of Simone Biles,” the note stated. But that’s not it. Along with this, Cecile Landi has also earned a spot in the Honor Roll of Coaches alongside hundreds of other elite Team USA coaches. So why isn’t she still with the G.O.A.T., you ask?

Cecile Landi embarked on a new adventure in her coaching career

Simone Biles

The dynamic duo began their journey in 2017 and have been through several highs and lows. However, when she took on the role of the Olympian’s coach, she felt a kind of pressure like she never had in her coaching career. It always felt like people wanted to watch them fail. In their minds, there is no way they could improve upon the magic of the Olympian.

But it didn’t take too long to prove the naysayers wrong. What was her secret sauce? She just kept pushing herself and believed in her potential. In the French capital, this motto helped the Olympian consistently shatter the glass ceiling. However, as they returned to the States, it was time for them to part ways.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Cecile Landi would set up a new office by taking on the new role of co-head coach at the University of Georgia after the Paris Olympics. And Simone Biles couldn’t be any happier. Why? That’s because she truly believed that her long-time coach deserved the role.

Landi has always been there for the gymnast, especially with her schedule. Things would’ve been easier if she was a teenager who spent all her time at the gym. But the 27-year-old has her hands full off the mat, and the coach has always worked her way around it. When the Olympian moved into her first house, Landi helped her by showing her how to operate the dishwasher. Even though the coach is 850 miles away, the 27-year-old found a way to show her gratitude.
