One of the more intriguing fights on the 2025 boxing calendar is the fight between Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. on August 16, which takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada. This bout for Davis’ WBA lightweight belt is a rematch from March 1, when Roach and Davis fought to a controversial majority draw.

The controversy stemmed from Davis taking a knee in the middle of the ninth round without this being called a knockdown by referee Steve Willis. After rising from the knee, Davis went to have his face wiped off by his corner (which is grounds for disqualification), which also went unpenalized. Either of these decisions from Davis receiving the proper consequence would have meant he lost the fight to Roach, thus suffering the first loss of his professional career.

Alas, that was not the case, as “Tank” managed to escape with a draw and keep his belt. And how the boxing world is keen to see if he’ll produce a better showing against Roach in this second bout.

If Davis does win, there are a plethora of potential opponents he could face. Perhaps the most popular pick would be WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson, who faces William Zepeda on July 12.

And in a July 2 interview, Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn (who is promoting Shakur for this upcoming fight) made a strong statement about a potential bout between Shakur and Davis.

“I think [Shakur is] going to want to have those big fights. Gervonta Davis against Shakur is another tremendous fight. One of the best in the sport. Let’s get next Saturday dealt with [and] won and that will be the crowning moment for Shakur Stevenson,” Hearn said.

Hearn certainly isn’t alone in wanting to see Shakur and Tank finally fight after having circled each other for years.

Gervonta Davis Sends Direct Message To Lamont Roach Jr As Rematch Still Not Official

Gervonta Davis has shared an update on the situation surrounding his rematch with Lamont Roach Jr.

The 30-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland made a defence of his WBA world lightweight title against Roach earlier this year, with the fight ending in a split decision draw after a competitive twelve rounds at the Barclays Center in New York.

The result could have been very different however, after ‘Tank’ took a knee to the canvas during the ninth round after being on the receiving end of a Roach jab which referee Steve Willis failed to rule as an official knockdown. The champion later revealed that it was due to grease from his hair getting into his eyes.

A rematch between the pair is expected to take place in Las Vegas on August 16, with an announcement due in the coming weeks. There have been concerns around the delay in their second encounter being made official however, with both fighters going back and forth on social media in recent weeks.

In a post sent by Davis, the 30-year-old appeared to accuse Roach of holding out for a bigger purse this time around, which has left fans wondering whether the fight is actually going to go ahead.

“You should’ve been on that instead of calling for that $250k, [the f**k] is you waiting on? This bag bigger. THE F**K YOU FORGOT!”

Despite this, ‘Tank’ has also said:

“The plan is still the plan.”

Davis will have his sights set on righting the wrongs of the first fight and proving himself to still be the best lightweight on the planet, ahead of the likes of Shakur Stevenson.

The 30-year-old is also said to be considering a catchweight bout with Youtuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. although it remains to be seen whether this controversial match-up will happen before the end of 2025.

Lightweight superstar Gervonta “Tank” Davis is putting his WBC belt on the line this weekend against WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Lamont Roach Jr. The lightweight showdown is going down at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and, as expected, ticket prices are soaring for the highly anticipated fight.

Claressa Shields Didn’t Hesitate When Asked If Lamont Roach Will Beat Gervonta Davis In Rematch

Claressa Shields has weighed in on the upcoming rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr.

The lightweight stars fought to a split decision draw at the Barclays Center in New York on March 1, after an entertaining yet closely fought encounter which could have gone either way.

Roach forced ‘Tank’ to take a knee after clocking him with a stiff jab during the ninth round, but referee Steve Willis failed to rule this as an official knockdown, prompting outrage from ‘The Reaper’ and his team.

A rematch between the pair now appears to to have been finalised and looks set to take place in August, although an official date and location is yet to be announced, both Davis and Roach have confirmed that plans are in place for their highly anticipated second encounter.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Shields made no mistake in backing Roach to be successful this time around, as she expects the 29-year-old from Washington to be ‘even better’ next time.

“I think Lamont will be even better in the rematch … Right now, I think Roach wins the rematch, only because I think Tank needs to get his fear out the way.

“Sometimes anger helps you in a fight, you don’t want to completely lose it, you have to know how to use it. He’s so frustrated with other parts of his life that it’s hard for him to use all of it inside the ring. So I think therapy would help.”

The rematch was originally due to take place in June, but has now been pushed back by a couple of months, giving both fighters more than enough time to ensure they are fully prepared for what could be the biggest fight of their respective careers.

Gervonta Davis kept hold of his WBA Lightweight World Title in Brooklyn after a majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr.

Though Roach stepped through the ropes a heavy underdog, he impressed with his work and made it an extremely close twelve rounds. With scores of 115-113 to Davis and two 114-114s, the challenger was just a round away from causing a huge upset.

The result, then, is a sore one for Roach, since ‘Tank’ Davis took a knee in the ninth round but was not given a count by referee Steve Willis. A huge majority of big names in the sport have criticised the decision.

The New York State Athletic Commission looked into the matter, however ruled to keep the result a draw. Roach has now responded to the development via X, formerly Twitter.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Lamont Roach

“Look man I’m going tell y’all straight up, I ain’t sue nobody … MY TEAM submitted an appeal on my behalf. What it look like not having a team that don’t pull that trigger on some s**t that they know was wrong? They stood up for me. So all that lawsuit shit y’all can put to rest.”

“I’m not surprised about the decision by the NYSAC. A lil disappointed, yeah. Especially when they ACKNOWLEDGED the fact that Steve made the wrong calls in the 9th round. But I wasn’t banking on the overturn. Everyone know I won the fight and I’m satisfied with that. Part 2 on the way.”

The WBA may still order an immediate rematch, something Davis has welcomed and says he could be ready for it as early as May.
